Clicking sound from behind gauges when driving

When driving my 1986 528e I hear a clicking sound that clicks in time with the RPM. So, when lower speeds it clicks slower and at higher speeds, the clicking speeds up. This was occurring before changing my odometer gears and I thought would stop after replacing, but it’s still there.
Today tested it out with a whole separate gauge cluster and the ticking was still there which tells me it may not be the gauge cluster itself?
It doesn’t click at idle, only when driving.
Any ideas?

As I remember, there's an O2 sensor timer in the 528e that makes a ticking sound when it times out. Here's one old post about itL

edit: You'll notice the funny spelling of gauge in your post...that's a sneaky autocorrect feature of the board that happens when you flip the a and u around in your typing.

535is here, mine makes same clicking noise. Even with replaced gears. Just a quirk of an older car.

I have noticed some replacement gears make more noise than others. Some that have been called "Hobby Shop" gears make more noise than:

If you are asking for hard-and-fast rules, there aren't any, but that doesn't mean that it's difficult to understand where. You are asking about why your car is making a noise, which is a technical question.

Well, we don't have a "How To" subforum. Note the description of Tech Talk (bold emphasis mine): "E28 technical advice asked and given!
Troubleshooting, modifications and more." It's not expected that you know the specific part making the noise, because if that were required, it'd make your post unnecessary, right? Even if you don't know which part is making the noise, you know that it's a question about parts making noises. It's a technical question.

You're hearing the stepper motor in the odometer section. They don't move continuously, they pulse and sound a bit like a Quartz clock. A smear of silicone grease on the gears helps quiet it down considerably by taking up the lash in the stepper motor.
