Center Bearing Replacement
Center Bearing Replacement
If anyone has ever replaced the center bearing could you give me a break down of the steps to replace it, or scan that section of your Bentley manual and send it. I really need to replace it and just want to know if I want to try it myself or not.
Thanks, Nick

This article is close, however, on the E28 you should remove the driveshaft from the car. Replace the guibo also while you're in there and also check your universal joints for wear.
...however, I belive the next investment you make really should be a Bentley manual.

Just an update, the center bearing was replaced and the shop owner called and told me the clunking was gone but it still has a shimmy under acceleration. He said it was a front cv joint, I am fairly new to driveshaft/suspension components of this and all cars. He also briefly suggested a new driveshaft. Can you all share any knowledge about this.
Thanks, Nick

Well, I can tell you that there are few, if any, driveline shops that will rebuild a BMW driveshaft. I leaned on one about 5 years ago, but they wouldn't warranty it and I had to sign waivers. When that DS finally bit the dust earlier this year, I went with Driveline Service of Portland and was very happy. Depending on the year/model/transmission of your car, you're probably looking in the neighborhood of $400 + core charge.
Steve Haygood can also get drivelines for a similar cost, from a different supplier though that I can't remember off the top of my head.
Good luck, and HTH.
