Pirelli M5 Poster

Post by 88M5 »

For those of you looking for the Pirelli poster or any other automotive posters that we remember from days gone past then I suggest trying:

www.autotrend.com (this will take you to several car poster related sites.

I have no affiliation with these guys. I found the site by accident but looks like they have every poster imaginable. Lots of stuff I remember as a kid, that I wish I had saved...

Get your brain out of the gutter. The picture clearly illustrates a foundry worker.

Casey:

Are you still enjoying that "in the wrapper" M5 you picked up in California? I am still waiting to see some more information and photos on what must be one of the best e28 M5s in the US. When I was looking for mine, I talked with one of my contacts, who told me he had talked to your seller and that he had "changed his mind" about selling the car. You obviously changed it back!

I am extremely interested in locating the Pirelli M5 poster. I have checked on several web sites before and have come up empty. I looked at the site you referenced and could not find the Pirelli poster. Is it there and I just overlooked it? Any information on locating this would be appreciated - is it like the search for the Holy Grail?

In case you missed it, check the other thread (a couple down right now) and PM BNC about getting one if his buddy does another batch. I got one of the reproductions from Brad at 5er Fest 05 in South Carolina and it is quite nice.

Gray-

Sorry with the luck on the poster. I apologize, I was not positive that the site would lead you to the poster. I just knew that they had alot of cool inventory and there was a chance that you might find it there.

As far as the car goes. It just showed up today. The purchase was a bit interesting to say the least and I almost left California without it. It is as nice as he advertised. I was able to drive it down around Half Moon and the coast which was nice, but the seller was a bit confusing... Long story... In the end it work out well and he was cool about everything.

BTW... I am originally from Altlanta, born in Columbus, Ga... saw the Perry Ga... I will get the car cleaned up hopefully tomorrow and get some pics taken. The inside is NICE... What can I say, I have a nice E28 M5 but I sure as heck paid for it, still wondering if I made the right call...

Why is everyone so touchy about stating what they paid for an M5 ? Is it fear of ridicule ? IMO, you and the seller agreed to a price and the deal was done. You're happy and the seller is happy. I don't give a rat's a$$ about what some tire kicking, arm chair quarterback's opinion is regarding M5 prices. Too many of the individual's that spout off about M5 prices don't have the financial means to afford an M5. The cynical side of my personality makes me believe some of these individuals might even have a hidden agenda to hold the prices down. How else are they going to be able to afford the E28 they've been lusting after. IMO this lack of transparency is holding values down. Sure there's going to be a huge variance in price, high mileage beaters for $3k to whatever the market will bear for a pristine, low mileage example. As time goes on the beaters will be parted out, others will be destroyed in accidents, fires, natural disaster's etc. As the number diminishes the market will decide the actual value. But if people don't get over this irrational fear of posting what they've paid, it makes it difficult to establish the true market value.

I'll start with mine. Euro E28 M5, SN 1018034, build date 2/85, current mileage is 107,819 miles. The PO originally listed the car for ~ $14K. When I purchased the car it wasn't running and had some minor visible body damage, I paid $7200. It cost me $400 to get the engine running, unfortunately there where additional problems that cropped up later which resulted in a complete rebuild (balance and blueprinting, porting, swirl polishing of valves, etc) of the engine. Cost of the rebuiild, $16K so far. In addition I'll have the usual cost of while your in there while reassembling car. Once the mechanicals are completed, I'm estimating I have $3k - $5k of body work to correct the various hidden issues that weren't found during my purchase inspection. When finished I'll have ~ $23K - $28K invested. Would I be able to recoup the investment, maybe, but I don't care. I think a fair appraisal would be between $20k - $25k for insurance purposes, based on the rarity of the Euro M5s, the rebuilt engine and the cosmetic reconditioning. Will it sell for $20k to $25K, I don't know, we'll find out if I decide to part with the car at some point in the future.

Sorry for continuing the hijack of the thread. To get back on subject, if anyone finds a source for the Pirelli Poster I'd like to purchase one

Not yet, I asked him but haven't followed up with him since. I'll probably be stopping by there in the next week, I'll see if he can look them up in his notes. At some point I will get them, I still owe him $$$s and the engine is in my garage.

Casey:

How in the world did a nice boy from Columbus, GA wind up in California? What a coincidence that we would meet talking about e28s on line and you would be familiar with my little hamlet of Perry, GA! I just love how mutual interest in these old cars bring folks together.

I am still looking forward to photos of your M5.

Rich apologized for "hijacking" this thread, but he does make an excellent point re: current market values for M5s. While I was shopping around, I thought I had a pretty good handle on FMV for good to excellent M5s but I was a little puzzled about the reluctance of some folks to share what they paid for theirs.
I know what the seller was asking for the one you bought and I imagine you wound up paying asking price or pretty close. Given mileage and condition, I do not think this would have been out of line. You would have paid more for a "loaded up" Honda Accord with a V6. Which car would you rather have long-term?

These are extremely rare cars, with a great history, and an active group of people who continue to have an abiding interest in them. Nice ones don't come around too often. All of this makes for an interesting market.

If someone wants to start a thread about what they paid for their M5, with the history behind that particular car, I will join in with great interest. Actually, I think I got a pretty good deal on mine and would be interested in knowing if the pros on this board agree or disagree.

We sort of got off track from the Pirelli poster theme here!

Actually- I am living in Kansas City now, I went to California to buy the car.

I continued this conversation in the "what you paid" thread, before I read your last post. Sorry....
