Hey guys,

Hope somebody can lead me in the right direction. To make a long story short, I might have the opportunity to purchase a 91 318is with 130K miles. Right now the gentlemen who has it is trying to get all the paperwork, to get the title under his name. the only thing is that he has no keys. The current owner went to jail and and lost everything. I will be checking to make sure the car is not stolen, thats why i want him to get the title and show it to me before i even decide to purchase. the car was sitting a couple of blocks from my house for at least a month. he doesnt have the keys, so thats what i need help in. how can I get keys for this car. I might be able to take the car real cheap since he doesnt want it and they guy in jail doesnt either. the car just needs a good cleaning but looks fine. I also want to check all the electrics and engine before purchase but need a key. if he gets the paperwork and might take it from him for hopefully 500 bucks and then fix the problem with the keys.

you can get keys from the dealer with the title and driver's license, which probably have to match.

yep, you need to show proof ow ownership to get keys at the dealer. The guy with the car will have to get a mechanic's lein or abandoned vehicle title (or whatever the equivalent is in your state), before he can get a key.

I got plain plastic head keys cut for less than $6 each. Lighted keys are much more.

Yup, cheap. lighted keys are 20 or so, the plastic ones some dealers like to get 11 each others it is 2 for 11. Depends on how bad the local dealer thinks he can screw his non-warranty parts customers as they control pricing.
