Doing the 5 speed swap.

Post by 1st 5er »

Looking for something to do this weekend?

Email content to the local H-town bunch;
Anybody...

...wanna come out and play?

Just kidding, really it'll be more like work, especially since it's my first crack at this mod.

This coming Saturday, the 7th, I'm going to begin the process of doing the 5 speed swap in our '85 528e.
I'm going to be swapping motors at the same time.

I'll have plenty of ice cold water, it's gonna be hot, on hand.
If there's something else specific you'd like to see in the cooler, let me know in advance so I can get it, or bring your own.

I'll probably be starting around 8 or 9 and going til... well, I'm sure it'll be a several day adventure.
You're invited to stay for the whole party, but if you only want too come by for a short time, any time during the day, that'll be OK too.
I'll be taking care of food as well, but it won't be burgers on the grill this time though, sorry.

If you just want to drop in, check on progress, and offer encouragement, that too will be appreciated.

Feel free to invite and bring along a friend.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.
The invitation is open to out-of-towners as well.
I've got couches.

Thanks to:
Rich
Jose
and
Alex.

Thanks guys.

Day one complete, almost. :)
We got the drivetrain pulled from the donor.
Tonight, hopefully, I'll get the pedal assembly and hydraulics out of the donor.
And then tomorrow it's on to the ailing patient.

Invitation still stands for Sunday... :D

I'd love to come over but I'm afraid I'm too drunk to drive.
It's a long drive . . Maybe I'll sober up halfway through Mississippi. They've got bigger problems than me I'm sure

Pedal assembly and hydraulics are out of the donor.
Donor transmission and clutch assembly is separated from the motor, now for those damn flywheel bolts... :x

Throughout this week, in the evenings, I'll be pulling the tranny and auto specific parts from the eta and hopefully complete the process.

It'd be nice to have an air conditioned garage along about now.

Man, it's hot!!!
Yesterday afternoon I got the exhaust and driveshaft out, drained the fluid and disconnected the lines.
Then a couple of friends, not the wrenching kind, dropped by.
Since I'm baching it this week,
I cleaned things up, hung out, had a late dinner out, and called it a day,
literally, as it was midnight when we rolled back into my driveway.
Hopefully, this evening the auto will be laying on the ground.
Did I mention it was hot?

Cut a hole in your garage wall and put in a fat window unit and work with the door closed

Actually there are two windows in my garage.
But, what do I do with all the crap all over the floor?

The test drive proved the M20 does in fact have a bit of life in it.

My wife, "Sport", thinks it's the bomb now.
Her new nickname was picked up at this past Saturday night's meet,
can't remember which one of you guys said, "she's a real Sport",
for coming straight to the meet after being picked up at the airport,
flying in from a week away at her mother's.

Don't know if she'll even want to get back in the touring once it's a/c is functional again.
We'll see...
I did mention looking for a donor to swap the T to a 5 speed, she smiled... :D

One final issue to deal with and then the driver's knee panel goes back on and a pic will be posted.

 again to all those that helped,
adding Arturo to the list, who came over one evening this past week.

Looks are nice, and thanks for the compliment, but the feeling, that's the better reward.

That's freakin' awesome dude! I'd have dropped by if I didn't live 1000 miles away... thought about doing the same thing to my 635 before I focused my efforts on my E28...
