slow windows

Post by roadrunrx »

This is my second e28 with slow windows. what are the common causes for the windows being slow to go up? especially the back windows.

hmmmm

I dunno...

maybe being 25 years old?

Run them up and down about 100 times...help if you need to.

Then consider opening the door panel for further work if you need to.

Dirty window switch contacts and rock-hard grease in the window regulator mechanism and window glass slider channel.

X2 -- particularly re: the now tar-like consistency of that ~25 year old grease. Cleaning the window switch contacts is a good step to take as well, simple preventative maintenance.

+1. I cleaned the crappy old grease from the driver's side window regulator on my e32 & put fresh white lithium grease on it this spring, and that window goes up/down considerably faster than the passenger window. Cleaning the old off can be a bit of a nasty messy business, but I followed the advice of someone else here on the board & used some gun cleaner spray for the job, and it worked well. Just make sure you do it in a well-ventilated place (not a closed garage.)

e28 windows are slow. if they are worse than normal, they need better electrical contact and less friction to operate in their normal slow state.

X3 to all of the above...this has worked well for me:

Need
>white lithium
>silicone spray
>WD 40 or PB Blaster
>patience

Remove door card and carefully pull back plastic film
Put window halfway down. Spray WD40 on the scissor connections and bearing surfaces. Put window 3/4 down, then pull up on glass as you put window up with swtich. Pinc hand and fingers. Do this 5 xs or so. Then spray white lithium on gears and bearing surface on motor mechanism. "pull" window up and put down 10x or so. Then, if that wasn't enough, spray silicone in the window channels from top to bottom, especially inside of door - liberally - too much is not enough. Repeat up and down, finish beer. By now, the mechanism has been "worked" and lubricated and the friction should be gone.

The old grease, dry channels, crusty connections as mentioned all contribute. You have to "unfreeze" the 25 year old mechanism and work the glass up and down. Finish 3rd beer.

This is what I used to take the old grease off, before applying white lithium grease to the assembly. It's like $3 a bottle at Canadian Tire and can also be used to take out grease stains from clothes!

I knew cleaning the switches helps and have done it several times before. I replaced the switches in the 7 with illuminated counterparts,(and did no other repairs) it was amazing how much faster the windows are. It was nice to see the difference that one repair does. Any other time I cleaned window switches, it was as a package where the regulators were cleaned, etc.
