T-Bones Run in the Family... (large pics)
...or We're out of the Touring Business, you're choice.
My wife was on her way home from work and some dufus in an SUV pulls out and tries to drive through her car.
She was very shaken up but physically unhurt.
Now to war with the other guy's insurance company.
Sorry for the image quality, I took the pics.

I don't think Sherman pulling out the map light above the rearview mirror will impact his insurance settlement. I'll happily send him my (cracked) one to replace it.
What I'm really curious about, though, is how the car looks from the inside and the details of the impact. As I drive the same model and the occupant of the right seat is usually my girlfriend, I'm very interested in seeing how much intrusion resulted from a direct hit by a massive vehicle.

Good god man... and I really wanted that Touring too
Glad she's okay... I missed your message about Memo's yesterday until this evening
The good news is I know several pick-a-parts with E34's in them for the doors and fender... you're gonna need to work some magic on the quarter though. Let me know if you need a hand on the tear down, or just some company.

Glad you have a case of the heavy duty rubbing compound as I don't think the white stuff will be enough for that little ding.
Thanks guys for all the kind word gestures.
My wife and I are literally like crazy.
Very entertaining, thanks for the help relaxing.
It usually is.

Yes the interior is black and probably an easy 8 to 9er.Tammer in Philly wrote:Also, is the interior black? There are a few bits I need. :-)

The car only has 125,657 miles on it, and really doesn't show it.
Parting it will be a possibility.
This will all depend on the insurance company salvage valuation and...
I had them tow the car to my house for several reasons;
1 - wanting easy access to it for personal item retrieval.
2 - make personal assessments about it being salvageable or not.
3 - leverage with insurance company - no storage fees due payable to 2nd parties should mean more resources available for disbursement to me.
4 - ...
So, we'll see.
OK vultures, here's your chance to shine.
If anyone wants any specific parts feel free to post here in the thread what you want and IF it ends up being parted out you'll get first dibs,
unless it's something big and would be a PITA to ship and someone local wants it,
or someone want the whole car.
I'll get some pics of the interior tomorrow.Tammer in Philly wrote:What I'm really curious about, though, is how the car looks from the inside and the details of the impact. I'd be interested in seeing an interior pic of the passenger door/cabin intrusion. What was the speed of impact, approximately?

The door is 'V' shaped at the bottom of the window opening and is pushed in at least 3 inches.
My wife's speed was somewhere in the 35 to 40 mph range.
She was in the left lane of a 4 lane, esplanade divided, 40 mph zoned road in fairly heavy traffic.
The dufus darted from a 'T' intersection attempting to make it across both lanes and turn left on the opposite side of the road.
A large vehicle to my wife's right was turning right into the 'T' intersection, thus hiding our car from his view until it was too late.
So, not sure of the speed, although I'm sure he was heavily accelerating attempting to dart through an imagined hole in the line of traffic.
The 'B' pillar is pushed in and now barely touching the seat.
I'll access the full extent of damage in the next couple of days.
All structure above and below the door appear to be fine.
We've got a new grandchild coming as I type, so when we get back from College Station, tomorrow or Wednesday, I'll have more time to look at it.
My wife had just, 10 minutes before, called me telling me our daughter-n-law had gone into labor,
and she was heading home, to change, pack a few things and drive to their house in College Station.
Life does throw it's punches...

Rocker covers and trim from the door bottoms, washer nozzles, driver seat bottom (mine has a split) or just the leather and heaters (if equipped) from the seats, though it would surprise me greatly if someone wouldn't want both of the seats intact, and various trim from the hatch area.
You seriously should consider the M50 swap into something else. E21?

Who had the 5 speed that matches up to the M50 for sale?

Not sure, but you can mate any M20 trans to it with a little bit of work on the shifter parts. I will soon have a Turner EWS delete chip tuned for an exhaust and lightweight flywheel. I will have to pull it from the wife's car once I add the M3 cams. At that point I'll go to a WAR chip on that car so I (well, George) can tune it.
An M50 with an 82 528e flywheel is a mighty fin combo.

Indeed. Glad your wife is in good shape, and congrats on the impending addition to the family.1st 5er wrote: I'll get some pics of the interior tomorrow.

Seems like, from your description, the primary issue for a passenger's safety would have been head-related. That shredded sheet metal indicates a pretty hard/direct hit, and you can see the door crash bar inside seems to have held up well. But the upper part of the door/lower window frame and B-pillar being pushed in is bad news for the head of someone sitting there (as the head, in an impact, is probably moving toward the outside of the vehicle). I guess nothing short of a curtain airbag is going to make a big difference in that sort of situation. Yikes.
Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Did I mention how thankful I was it was not a driver's side impact?Tammer in Philly wrote:Indeed. Glad your wife is in good shape, and congrats on the impending addition to the family.1st 5er wrote: I'll get some pics of the interior tomorrow.

There is more glass on the driver's side of the car than the passenger side,
if that adds anything to the damage that could have occurred had there been a passenger over there.
But yes, the door did it's job well.
And you are welcome.
