BOUGHT - BMW part 33411129859 - Drive Shaft Flange

[1st 5er]

This is referencing my E28 ///M5.



My impulse ring removed itself from this assembly and has broken in half.

I pulled one from one of my parts cars, '85 535i, which according to Real OEM should interchange, but they don't.
The splines are different, same number but coarser.
It looks like #5 in this illustration;


Any thoughts?

I'd like to replace just the impulse ring if possible.

I know e30m3 guys do this on front hubs, using e28 front hubs but swapping over the e30m3 abs ring since it's different. I'd probably freeze the hub assembly, torch the ring, and use a puller. Also, I hear praying helps.

The part I pulled from the '85, mentioned above, had the coarse spline.
Did these spline differences perhaps change at the same time the steering column splines changed?

Sherman, I checked the ETK just for the hell of it and it's showing the same thing, even the non-ABS cars

The ABS flange supersedes the non abs flange.

I remember a discussion by someone here stating they'd drive their car without the ABS activated,
well I've driven this one, without the ring on the left rear hub, and it ain't no fun under certain conditions.

Question:
I know I could do this and find out from experience, and will do it tomorrow,
but for now,
would disabling the ABS at the control box have the same effect on the system as it getting the signal it does from this rear wheel without the abs ring attached?

If you pull the relay or brain, the car will brake like an 84. With the tone ring missing, it'll just turn off the ABS and throw the warning light. My car has no front wheel sensors, so no abs. I forget sometimes, though.

Do you have the relay pulled and/or the brain unplugged, or just missing the sensors?

Are you saying that the braking reaction will be the same even with the relay/brain unplugged as it is in our current states?

That is correct. The ABS only pulses when it senses lockup but is otherwise has no effect on braking.

I think you need a brake bomb, too. The boost will go away after a short period if the bomb is bad, then because you are standing on the pedal when the boost comes back you lock them up.

But everything was normal until the ring popped off, and broke in half.
I'll wait to do the bomb change until after I get the flange replaced.
I should have a spare one out there somewhere.

As seen above I've pulled one from an 86 and it was a no go.

If you've got 2 in good shape, I'll take 'em both.

I misread that, I thought it was an 85 sans the abs ring that didn't work. Both of ours are 86 or newer but not M5s. Can't believe the spines are different. Both were ABS cars.

Sherman, disable the ABS and learn how to threshold brake. You shouldn't be playing hard if you need ABS to keep you out of trouble.
