Hello MyE28.com,

My name is Chris and I have owned a 1983 (11/82) 528e for almost a year, the car was originally Polaris Silver when I purchased it.

I purchased it for $500 shortly after my '99 Sunfire crapped out on me. The paint was in really rough shape, flaking down to the primer in some spots, so it was an obvious respray... possibly more than once. None of the gauges worked when I bought it either.

My main concern at the time was that it drove and stopped, which it did.

I've replaced the vinyl front seats with cloth (still pac blue) but left the rear as vinyl for now. Timing belt was changed shortly after I made the purchase as well.

I have repainted the car recently using a 4" high density foam roller and some Interlux Brightside marine paint.... Sea Green to be exact.

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures of the beast, I'll get some interior shots eventually, though there's nothing spectacular about a half cloth half vinyl pacific blue interior.

I absolutely LOVE that you painted this with a roller. Good on ya!

Quite shocked, really.

Love the color, and the paint roller... More pics are necessary. Now, just plasti-dip the black trim, grill and door handles, and the car will be complete!

It looked great until I put the second coat on. It was too hot outside when I did it so the paint didn't have a chance to lay down before it started drying.

The pictures I've put up are of the first coat. I'll give it a wash and take some of how it sits now. I have visible roller marks in the hood and roof, I'm still toying with the idea of a third coat once the weather is a little cooler.

I'm glad it's been so well received lol.

I can't believe it went on that well with a roller.. Did you use a paint brush from the tighter bits?

I've seen roller paint jobs with matte finish paint that looks pretty damn good.

don't laugh, that's exactly what I did! A 1" foam brush for the tight spots lol

I got the idea from a mopar forum thread that it well in excess of 100 pages and I looked at some projects on www.rolledon.com

Alright, I gave it a quick wash and snapped some more photos. These were taken with my cell phone as I don't actually own a digital camera.



I tried to get a shot of the roller marks in the hood....






A texture similar to that of an orange lol.. I expected this to happen when I did the roller job, but I don't particularly care to remedy it.

had to show off the Gorilla tape on the ducts. the flapper doors between the heat an AC boxes are broken.


The Green Bible and my spare rad. My radiator is currently leaking from an end cap and I am in the process of sourcing the hoses.

I patched my Bosal muffler with a Tim Hortons coffee can for a while, but eventually the baffles rusted free so I hacked it off with a sawzall and bought a Magnaflow 10435.


This is how she sits as of today. I do plan on cutting a coil off each corner to start, but I'm not sure when that's going to happen.

Y'know, applying with a roller puts a lot of paint on. Enough that you can wet sand and polish it a lot without cutting through it. It just takes patience, water, and paper.

one of these days I might fix it, but it's my DD and without a spare vehicle I'll be driving around with shiny spots until it's complete.

wet sanded with 600 and rolled on another coat.









There's still a couple of spots that I have to get with a small brush, but I want out of time this weekend.

Maybe should have started with something coarser and worked DOWN to 600...

I'm in the process of painting my car white from cosmosblau (9 coats so far and I think it'll need a couple more).

I've got a few questions since your car looks really good:

1. What did you remove when you painted the car? Took everything off except for the bumpers and the side strip, but I'm thinking it would have looked cleaner if I took them off.
EDIT: NVM, looks like your bumpers were on when you did it. I suggest wet-sanding them with fine sandpaper and if it doesn't work, get some black spraypaint and repaint it

2. What was the consistency of your paint? I tried 50-50, but 70-30 (more paint than mineral spirits) worked better with drips, but it dried to a bad texture. I'm going to wet sand mine down with 1000 grit, do a layer or two and then finish it with 1500.

3. How did you do the inside of the door panels? I tried spraying and rolling, but none of them had good results so far.

Some of the wetsanding was done with 320 to knock down the roller marks, but the majority was 600. It was still pretty easy to burn through to the polaris. I'm not really going for a glass finish, just wanted to get rid of the roller marks from the last coat lol.

I didn't take anything off the car, just masked over it. The paint is Interlux Brightside marine paint (Sea Green) poured straight into the tray and rolled on, no thinning necessary.

There's a couple of projects on www.rolledon.com that use the marine paint.

I'm not going to lie, there is a lot of orange peel and it takes a very very long time to dry. You need cool weather so that the paint can somewhat self level. I only painted the exterior and along the edges of the doors.

If I ever bother to go through the trouble to paint the current car, it will likely be a paint-roller job. The chassis in general isn't solid enough to warrant a 'real' paint job.

I am probably going to finally spray-bomb the roof and trunk to match the hood soon.

I have since done a third coat and waxed it this time lol.
