FS 1988 BMW M5

Post by Bakester »

At this time I have decided to sell the E28. The car has 195K and 10K on the rebuilt engine. I have enjoyed restoring this car but two M5's are a challenge to keep up, and It will be costly to sore it next year. The car runs and drives excellent, the body is in good shape, the car is solid, and the interior is fair. I have replaced many things and will never be reimbursed, but just driving the car was worth the price. I will list some of the things that were replaced below along with pics to follow tomorrow. Everything works but the auto door locks. I thought I would keep this car forever and still may if I do not sell. I have driven this car to my office 100 miles one way once or twice a week since the rebuild that was finished the first of the year (in good weather, well mostly). The car really is amazing. It is fast, reliable (as long as you keep up the maintenance, and I would n)), and a driving experience second to none. In my case second to the E39 M5 because I am keeping that car although I have always said I prefer the driving experience of the E28. Many new parts when I bought it as well

Thank you, VIN wbsdc930xj2791922

I can view them logged in on two computers?? I followed the instructions in the FAQ and I had no problems. Would you try it again and report back?
The Head work was done at Davis Auto parts (machine shop in back) in Cave City KY and the rest at Furlongs Motor Service in Glasgow KY
I have the car there now so local prospective buyers can meet with the owner of the shop and see the car on a lift.

Were you trying to sell this car a year or two years ago on craigslist? Just want to know since I'm in Louisville and remember an M5 posted on the Bowling Green Craigslist sometime back. Surprised you found someone in those parts of KY (Cave City and Glasgow) that you would trust to even touch that 'ol gurl  Gorgeous paint and head!!! GLWS

I finally purchased the car from the person selling it on craigslist. The paint is good but not great and it has a few dings, some very minor surface rust on the inside of the trunk latch and a small spot on the sunroof. Thank you for the complements. The real strength of the car is the powertrain, The car pulls and pulls, and although I have never driven a new one I can say this car runs like glass. I really need to sell it to build a deck and she bought a Prius so I'm going to get bumped out of the garage. :(

AAaggh - stab me in the eye :help: Skip the deck, build the 3rd bay on that garage!!

Car looks nice, though, look forward to more pictures. You should be able to find a buyer, even in this soft market, with a fresh motor like that.

Please add this car to the BMW M Registry (www.bmwmregistry.com). I remember seeing these photos of 2791922 sometime ago and remarked that this is one best looking E28 M5 examples I have seen. The 16-inch alloys look fantastic in those images!

and cannot understand why people Euro-convert the M5s. I don't think I'd ever do that to a US M5.

Good luck with the sale!

I could and still may if it does not sell. I spent 14.5 K in and maintainance in 15 months on the E39, and soon I will total up the E28 :( when I have a serious buyer, but I am sure it is close to that not including purchase. I will take a hit selling at 10K but not as bad as if i keep it because I wont stop and spend more on the body and interior.
I have the oversize swaybars, in the front it is as loose as can be adjusted and the rear as tight, and with the new negative camber from the upper strut crash mounts and all new bushings and it handles nice. It needs a front strut bar fom Mason engineering... I have already talked to him. I need to have someone come test drive this thing that has driven a good one for a comparison, it won't dissapoint.
BMW of Nashville did a bunch of stuff for PO at 160K
Clutch, driveshaft, hub, this car is full of new parts.

I can no problem Chris especially with cars with mileage.

This car does have a nice stance and that makes the US boat anchor step stool bumpers look better :D

Another fun fact about the car was one of the PO's, there have been 4, JB welded the head and there was a significant oil leak after I bought the car. It looks like someone tried to remove the timing cover without removing the top allen bolts. The head was in three pieces so I had it aluminum welded proper. 10K later and it is tighter than a bull's ass at fly time! I am just too honest and after driving it this AM not so sure I want to sell. More pics from last year.

Same here, I prefer the US look, same with Porsche 944, somehow they look better with "longer" bumpers, at least IMHO.

Keep it. Newer M5's are easier to find. Harder to find good E28 M5's.

Haven't seen this one around Nashville but nice to know another good E28 is in town.

My new head has arrived and hopefully will have the Turbo E28 (M30B35 TCD S1) back on the road by end of October.

Are you in the Old Hickory CCA?

I understand but my E39 is really nice at 125K, it looks like 50K or less and has always preformed flawlessly. However, that car did leave me stranded one time in 50K miles with a broken radiator hose and the E28 has never left me stranded or not started in 10K.

Rich I am in old hickory but have a difficult time attending the meetings. I would like to see your car. Any pics?

Ken,

As the younger generation exclaims "I know right?" I planned on sending an email or giving you a buzz to get your take on this, so how bout later this afternoon look in the inbox and I will tell you just what a deal this is. I would like it to go to a enthusiast, and I wont sell to someone who does not intend to treat the car as it needs to be treated. I have no problem keeping it and doing the seats (only the passenger side is in need absolutely) and minor body dings in stages but like I have said it is more about the chase for me and it is addicting and expensive and I want to go to Europe, deck, Blah F@#$%ing blah.

If I had $10k I'd send it to my parents and have them buy it from you. They live in Franklin, my home town of 15 years. :D

GLWS, I still aspire to have an M5 one day.

Here is a link to some pics and info on the car as of the time when I purchased it. Had some interest on the turbo set up but no one pulling the trigger so I may just keep it boosted for awhile for fun.

Yes. I had the complete turbo system for sale (including chip, injectors, exhaust, Stage I kit, etc...) If you search by my user name, you should see the details in my post on it.

Were you driving it this morning? Saw a nice E28 M5 going north on 65 just before the concord road exist. Honked and gave a thumbs up.
