How to install a limited slip differential (LSD) on a BMW E28 535i?
How to install a limited slip differential (LSD) on a BMW E28 535isuika game? I have a 1987 BMW E28 535i with an open differential, and I want to upgrade to a LSD for better traction and handling. I have found a used LSD from a BMW E30 M3, but I'm not sure if it will fit or what modifications are needed. Can anyone advise me on how to do this swap, or point me to some resources or guides?

Any medium or large case diff bolts right in. Some require swapping the stub axles.
The e30 m3 ratio is going to suck though. The m30 works best with taller gears.

Diff ratios are kind of a personal thing, I think 3.46 is ideal at least for a daily driver, many feel a 3.73 or the rare 3.64 are ideal. A few go even taller to 2.93 for better MPG, but few. It appears an E30 M3 will have a 4.10 ratio, which is extremely short, somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear with a stock 3.25. I doubt you'll like it. But the good news is I suspect it is worth more than the popular 3.73 so it shouldn't be a loss.
And by the way, this should have been posted in either General Conversation or Tech Talk, not Diesel. One of the Beamters will probably move it so if it goes missing look in one of those subforums.
