Unsafe login?
Unsafe login?
Are others still getting this "unsafe" message upon login?
Seems to be something to do with the time setting.
Or, at least that's the message I'm getting.
Is it my phone and laptop, or something here?

See it now.
Where's Justin? :-)

Justin's aware of the issue. I have no insight other than to say that.

Re: Unsafe login?
this usually happens once a year (on this particular site, i've noticed) if the certificate doesn't get renewed before it expires. no big deal.
Re: Unsafe login?
Thanks Beamters.
Re: Unsafe login?
I'm still getting the security warning. Do we need to start a Go Fund Me to raise money for the cert ?
Re: Unsafe login?
Money isn't the issue. I won't say more for now.
Re: Unsafe login?
I stopped my monthly donation but I'll start it up again if the SSL cert can get renewed (sheesh).

Re: Unsafe login?
When you bypass the warning the first time it doesn't warn you again (or least that's how it works for me), so it's not a big deal.

That's why the "thanks" above.
And now that we're back to that point, "Thanks" again.
Re: Unsafe login?
I’ve been hearing a lot about this on BaT, going back months, and I finally was brave enough to continue into the site, despite all the dire warnings.
I have a newly acquired 83 533i, and have been itching to get in here for advice and tips.
Still…..
Renewing the certificate cost about $60 I think, and sure would bring back lots of people that are not taking the chance to come here anymore.
Who’s in charge of the site ? Are they aware of this situation.
I’m new, so don’t mean to rock the boat, but cybersecurity threats and risks are pretty top of mind these days…
Is there an estimated time for when the certificate will be renewed ? It’s been many many months already…
Thanks!

Several people, it's complicated. And they are aware of it. I'm not sure what's going on, but I doubt it's a problem with $60 a year.banana86 wrote: Jul 25, 2024 6:52 PM

Re: Unsafe login?
Perhaps they should have a Pow-Wow and get it figured out. Traffic to this forum is already way down and it's sad that it's limping out a slow death like this. This forum WILL DIE if the SSL issues and the repeated SQL failures that take days/weeks to fix aren't addressed. That's a really, really sad thought because this is one of the few repositories of really useful information for these old cars.
Re: Unsafe login?
Re-read the entire thread, please, particularly my comments.
Read the Forum FAQ. Of course we're aware, jeez (again, re-read my comments).banana86 wrote: Jul 25, 2024 6:52 PM Who’s in charge of the site ? Are they aware of this situation.
As one of "they," I assure you we're not blithely ignoring it. You can't have a Pow-Wow if a key figure has dropped from communication.

Re: Unsafe login?
Getting past the security warning is a mild annoyance at best - you just have to click on a couple things and then you're here just like always.
Yes, traffic on the forum is down from where it used to be, but I think the major reason is simply because there aren't as many of these cars left on the road compared to 10 or 20 years ago. You can't do much about that.

Additionally, "kids" these days abhor traditional forums, preferring alternate sites or groups, like Facebook/Instagram. I regularly meet resistance on Facebook when I suggest MyE28 because they "don't want to bother with" forums and just want a quick answer on a site where they don't have to join.stuartinmn wrote: Jul 26, 2024 11:02 AM Yes, traffic on the forum is down from where it used to be, but I think the major reason is simply because there aren't as many of these cars left on the road compared to 10 or 20 years ago. A common problem for sure. Fortunately there is a contingent of us keeping M5board alive as well. The wealth of stored knowledge is almost incomprehensible. I can only imagine it's the same way here. Not to fear, I came into being a car enthusiast during the "forum age" and have recently acquired an e28 M5. I love using M5board and it would be convenient to just click on a sub forum to go between my first loves - E39's, to my new mistress, E28. I look forward to contributing here with what I can!Shawn D. wrote: Jul 26, 2024 11:50 AMAdditionally, "kids" these days abhor traditional forums, preferring alternate sites or groups, like Facebook/Instagram. Re: Unsafe login?
A perfect example of why nobody knows anything anymore. FB/IG posts are seen once, then disappear into the oblivion. Any of the FB groups just have the same questions posted over and over and over again with the same frustrated answers. Gee.....if only there were a way to search for what you want to know? I've been able to find most of what I wanted to know without posting anything here. That's not something you can do on FB groups.Shawn D. wrote: Jul 26, 2024 11:50 AM Additionally, "kids" these days abhor traditional forums, preferring alternate sites or groups, like Facebook/Instagram. You can see your quotes above in this thread, that you haven't said jack-all about what the issues are or what possible actions are planned to resolve the issue(s) and yet you go to admonish the posters for not understanding. You evaded any real response other than to allude to some in-fighting amongst the Beamters responsible for keeping this forum alive. And to reference the Forum FAQ is fine, except there hasn't been a new post to any of those threads since 2018.
I don't mean to openly criticize you or the others that tirelessly attend to this wonderful community; it is no doubt a daunting task to keep this thing going. But, there is obviously a problem (or few) that has been plaguing this site for well over a year that the rest of the regular and new users don't understand and the Beamters/founders aren't explaining. Again, don't take this the wrong way, these criticisms are being made to hopefully initiate a positive outcome.
This forum is at critical cross-roads right now: current social media sites and other private messaging platforms have drained away a large portion of otherwise regular site users here. Some in part from changes in communication but others as direct result from these technical issues that have been plaguing the site for some time. If there aren't key structural corrections made soon, this site will go away and with it an almost incalculable wealth of knowledge. I for one do not want to see that happen and will openly support whatever corrective actions need to happen to ensure the longevity of this site into the future.
We just need to know what that is.
Re: Unsafe login?
There's no in-fighting, as I'd use the term. No one is disputing there are issues and fixes are needed. A key person has become incommunicado.vinceg101 wrote: Jul 26, 2024 1:15 PM Not to pile on, and while I won't pretend to know about what is possibly happening behind the scenes here,I have to call you out on this, Shawn.

It should be obvious that comment was specifically in response to the noob with two posts who asked "Who’s in charge of the site?" and "Are they aware of this situation," not you or anyone else who has been here for a long time. It's clear that he hadn't read the FAQ or he'd know who, and once knowing who, paying attention in this discussion would show whether we're aware.vinceg101 wrote: Jul 26, 2024 1:15 PMAnd to reference the Forum FAQ is fine, except there hasn't been a new post to any of those threads since 2018.
Plenty of you seem to not understand that I am a member as well and am as concerned as Y'all are. While I am indeed a Beamter, I have no technical or legal authority over the site. I can't do anything about someone who isn't responding, and I can't provide any answers about why someone isn't responding when I have no idea why they are not responding. I can't do any more than I have already done. If Y'all want to harangue me about having no answers, I will not only continue to not provide answers that I can't provide, but will also stop responding whatsoever.vinceg101 wrote: Jul 26, 2024 1:15 PMI don't mean to openly criticize you or the others that tirelessly attend to this wonderful community; it is no doubt a daunting task to keep this thing going. Re: Unsafe login?
Thanks Shawn, that says a lot. More than you really needed to, but you're clearly frustrated. Perhaps naively I suspect it will all work out eventually, I feel like I know some of the parties involved, even if not face to face. My suspicion is this has become #3522 on someone's to do list. Life happens, sometimes cars are no longer the priority.Shawn D. wrote: Jul 26, 2024 6:12 PM

Well, I finally decided to get back on; even though my computer says not too:).
Fb etc is really not very helpful for people that are doing projects....I suppose it has its place.
This forum is really important, in fact if the forum goes down, I might reconsider doing another m535i.
Hope this gets fixed:).

Re: Unsafe login?
All we need are the last four digits of the social and the zip code of the person with the power over this site. Then the group can move forward. But with no communication with that person maybe we need to send out a search party but no one is in close proximity to the suspected location of that person with the power over this site.
And I can't even get an approval to join the fb group to learn what is going on over there.
What the heck. I've got access to this forum and Rod's Excellent Pages as well as a Bentley so maybe I can keep my car going a few more years.

Hell of a start for identify theft. If it was mine, and it's not, that is the last thing you would ever get from me. IMO, there's just certain things you don't do.

Well it is what you need to get in to be able to use the 'owner's benefits' to a website. Been answering those questions for a couple weeks as I argue with the bank about things. They can't even talk on the phone without verifying. PITA.Mike W. wrote: Aug 08, 2024 8:42 PMHell of a start for identify theft. Re: Unsafe login?
Shawn, thanks for redirecting me here.
Would it be possible for you and I to get on call to discuss this? I went through a very similar situation with in the late '90s with the PorschePhiles/PorcheList mailing lists/forums. I was able to work with several motivated individuals to save the content and community and redirect it to what is now www.rennlist.com.
We have a lot of options that range from attempting to take over the domain/phpBB site to archiving all the content and starting something new.
The key is to get moving before something else breaks technically that will cause the content to actually be lost.
Feel free to email me so we can coordinate.

Yes, but it would be a waste of time for both of us. Not to be testy about it, but as I've already said, I have no legal or technical authority here. I will PM you for your email to pass along to Catalyst/Jeremy.

Hoping this all gets resolved and back on track before the domain registry expires.

If it doesn’t get renewed, all services cease to function.

@Jeremy, I know you and @CEK have communicated about fixing the certificate issue with this forum.
He's done it previously with another car enthusiast site.
He has the expertise, and can be trusted.
So, before this thing crashes and burns and is declared a total loss, accept his offer to fix it.

I second this post by 1st 5er. I know CEK personally, who has been a member here for as long as myself, and owns a great deal of fine examples of E28s. His name is synonymous with top level product delivery (both corporate and enthusiasts like Holy Grail Labs fuse box solution), and I believe he can be 100% trusted with securing and preserving mye28.com for many more decades.1st 5er wrote: Nov 05, 2024 10:29 AM @Jeremy, I know you and @CEK have communicated about fixing the certificate issue with this forum.
