SOT: Computer internet firewall advice needed.
Two really big/well known software titles are Zone Alarm and Black Ice Defender. I used to use Black ICE, and I think its probably better for the average user just because its less complicated, and seems to give more information on who is trying to access your computer. I read a review of the new Zone Alarm and it seems that its almost too stringent at times, limiting your own access.
XP supposedly has a basic firewall, and a properly configured hardware router can definitely add some security.

it really depends on your needs. With XP SP2 the built in firewall is turned on by default, but even in XP gold and XP SP1 there is a rudimentary firewall built in.
You might try seeing if the firewall in SP2 is good enough to meet your needs before spending money on getting additional stuff.
How do yo know you need a firewall, if you dont mind me asking?
