After some initial voltage, resistance and frequency tests on my ABS speed sensors, I determined that my right rear sensor was giving me funky readings. I decided to "attempt" to pull out the sensor, clean and replace it. WOW, what a major PITA!
First of all, don't try to force 20 year old plastic to bend in any angle whatsoever. The entire plastic housing that covers the tip of the sensor broke off, leaving the sensor in the pulse wheel housing. OK, crap. Now I got to get a new sensor regardless. However, I had another challenge: How to remove the rest of the sensor. After about 1-1/2 hours, the rest of the plastic pieces were pryed out. But wait, there's more! What do I see? Why yes, the metal cylinder that encapulates the entire sensor is still in the pulse wheel housing. I tryed pulling, tugging and twisting. Nothing would budge. I finally got it out and discoved why it was so hard to remove in the first place. Rust was coating the entire metal cylinder and it was practically frozen to the pulse wheel housing. Good times!
