1985 BMW 528e

Post by frederickscott »

Good day. Here is the issue - I was driving one day and the the car stopped wanting to provide power up a slight hill. I was able to get the car to level ground. Once I started the car and put it into gear, it would go a few feet and then cut off. I was able to get it home via a tow. Now when I start the car, it can be hard to put it onto gear. I can put the car in reverse, but one I put it into drive, it cuts off. I was reading some forums that said it may be something with the gearbox alignment dowels, and that they need to be replaced. has anyone had this issue

Moving this to "Tech Talk." "Comments" is not for technical discussions.

It sounds as if you have bad motor and/or transmission mounts. A clue is that the behavior changes based on which way the drivetrain is being torqued. If it's this bad, you likely need to replace all four (2x engine, 2x transmission).

There is absolutely zero chance that alignment dowels are the issue.
