Fritz Bits Manifold and System Query (M30B34)

Post by Alan »

Hi All.

I was wondering if I could ask you for any experienced opinions on the Fritz Bits exhaust manifold and complete exhaust system, specifically regarding attachment.
Car - E28 M535i
Engine - M30B34

The problem I have is that the mating faces of the down-pipes from the exhaust manifold do not seem to match up correctly, where it connects to the inlet side of the centre-box. Please see the images I hope have attached to this message. You'll notice that only three of the mating faces are flared, and one is not.

I have asked Fritz Bits twice about this and both times they have assured me that this assembly is correct, no mods are required, and all that I will need are two gas rings.

Am I missing something here?? It would seem to me that one of those ends should be flared.

Can someone please correct me here? I'd be grateful for any experienced responses.

Not sure what is going on with pics. I tried to use dropbox...

That's a little bit different than what we see on US spec cars, but similar in a way. The non flanged pipe is supposed to slide into one of the flanged ones, that gives you some adjustability. Here we got one with 2, flat flanged surfaces which used a flat gasket, and one that slid in and used a ring. It seems weird, but if you think about it, it does serve a purpose. The thing that concerns me on yours is the straight pipe seems like it might be too short to slide in.

Pictures. Both Google and Apple make it very difficult if not impossible to post pictures using their services. For those of us who don't have their own domain hosting, https://imgur.com/ works very well and is used by many here including myself.

Many thanks for your reply, Mike. I have taken your advice and used Imgur. Very good tip!

When you mention sliding the non-flanged pipe into the flanged one, how is it supposed to remain there? The flare holds on the flat mating faces, but surely the flat mating face, as seen separate to the exhaust (deliberately), will just slide off?

Maybe I am better to just cut the flares off and install two exhaust clamps.

Point to note also, there's no flexi-pipe in this system, so I wonder what that will do with engine movements.

You will need a exhaust donut (aka gas ring) for the non flanged connection.

The e28 part number is: 18111723533

There are other diameter sizes and shapes. Im surprised they were not supplied with the rest of the exhaust system.

I think you need to flip the central silencer over and then change the down pipes over so that the unflanged pipe is on the inside of the two pipes. That way it will fit into the pipe correctly.
