Post by Brein »

Hello, looking too buy oil for my 518i (m10), tried to search for What oil too use but everyone has a diffrent answear, someone sats 20w50, 15w50, some say 5w20.
i am using this car as a sommer car and will be storing it for the winter, so it does not need oil for low temp, can someone give me a recommendation on What oil u should use?

Castrol GTX 20-50.
Then BMW went to 15w-40 in the E36 Erea. Both will work fine.

Like Jeff said, 20-50 is what was originally specified, and is still good. 15-40 or 15-50 would be ok too, really even a good synthetic 10-40, but no way anything like 5-20. M10s were built with relatively large clearances and need a thicker oil for those clearances.

From a BMW Owner's Manual from 1985.

20W-50 15°F to 122°F (-10 to 50°C)
15W-50 -4°F to 105°F (-20 to 40°C)
15W-40 -4°F to 85°F (-20 to 30°C)
10W-50 -20°F to 68°F (-30 to20°C)
10W-40 -20°F to 50°F (-30 to 10°C)
10W-30 -20°F to 40°F (-30 to 5°C)
5W-30 -40°F to 22°F (-40 to -5°C)
5W-20 -40°F to 15°F (-40 TO -10°C)

SAE 20 (-20 to 10°C)
SAE 30 (0 to 30°C)
SAE 40 (20 to 50°C)

My car was hard to start after leaving at the airport and returning a few days later with an outside temp of about 15C. The car has never had anything except 20W-50 except that one drive home from John's with a blend of 7½W-35 after the oil pan took a smack. If you have really cold weather, look for a lower W number but if the car is garaged and doesn't see such low temps, the 10/20W and 40 or 50 is good.

15w50 or 20w50. Preferably something with a good EP additive package. Zinc and Phosphorus, >1200ppm.

I run mobil 1 15w50 these days. Valvoline VR1 20w50 is good too but they have priced themselves out of the market IMO.
