Broken Flywheel Tooth

Post by e38740imd »

my previous m30b35 seized up and cause the starter casting to break and 1 broken tooth on the e28 m5 flywheel. will this be an issue? i dont have a trigger sensor on the fly wheel because of montronic 1.3. so can i get away with it?

its just 1

Since there's no crank sensor, you may be able to run with one broken tooth.

A picture might be of use, or not. It's really hard to say unless someone else has had it occur. At the very least I'd try cranking it over and seeing if any binding occurs before you install it or the tranny. I personally would look for another flywheel, although they aren't getting any cheaper or easier to find. What's it worth to you not to have to pull the tranny?

On the other side, on an E12 long ago I had a flywheel fail. The teeth pretty much got ground flat in 3 spots (compression point?) but there was never any grinding, just one day the starter went buzzzzzzz very quietly. So you might be ok.

thats what i was thinking since the starter doesnt grab 1 tooth at a time to start cranking

That's a good price for such a lightweight flywheel.

It is! And this is the HD version.

They have a 7lbs one for 50 bucks less. But 8.5 is enough for my use.

Clutch and pressure plate are still a bit heavy so it will work out.

Had a e21 320i with a bad flywheel. Idiots I bought it from did not bolt the starter down so the started shifted and chewed up the fly wheel. It did work kind of, some times had to turn the key a few times until it found a tooth. It worked but was not cool on a date.

If its just one busted tooth it ought to be OK. I'd take a file or a die grinder and knock off any burrs or sharp edges just to keep it from tearing up the starter pinion though.

Hmm that's a pretty big gap for the starter to jump. Hope it works.

I agree with Ed Helms- get a new flywheel.

I have this flywheel installed on my race car and have one race weekend on it so far with no issues. It revs pretty quickly.

Nice. Looks like it belongs on that fire hydrant. :)
