bought an e28 coupe to see what they're all about

Post by Hffvdbl »

I have been looking for a euro e24 for a couple of years now and finally found one recently, somewhat local to me. I picked it up in Austin from Terry Sayther.

Prod. Date 1984-07-05
Type 635 CSI (EUR)
Series E24 (6 Series)
Body Type COUPE
Steering LHD
Engine S38
Displacement 3.50
Drive HECK
Transmission Manual
Colour SONDERLACKIERUNG (490) blauschwarz
Upholstery (0180) anthrazit buffalo
S291A BMW LA Wheel Cross Spoke 2section
S320A Deleted Model Lettering
S350A BMW Composite Wheel Star Spoke 108
S401A Liftupandslideback Sunroof Electric
S498A Headrests Rear Mechanically Adjustable
S500A Headlight WipewashIntensive Cleaning
S530A Air Conditioning

It is a decent looking car that needs quite a bit of love, but a great starting point none the less. The car spent the majority of its life in California and the last decade or so in the Austin area. I was hopeful that the result of the car living in CA and TX would be a relatively rust free car. I was pleasantly surprised once I got it on to the lift that the car appears to be very dry. Initially, I have replaced little things like hood struts and fixed little stuff like turn signals, fog lights and with the help of M.Holtmeier figured out the brights/low beam issue. Mike bent the contact inside the switch so it doesn't always engage the high beams no matter what position the switch is in. Between his fix and some electronics cleaner and compressed air, the lights are fixed. Next on the docket is figuring out the A/C. More on that later.

After getting it a little more cleaned up, and swapping on some different wheels. These wheels fit WAY better on the e24 by the way! 17x8.5 and 17x10.

I will post updates as I dig deeper in to this car. It runs and drives fine so for now just trying to enjoy driving. I know that there are those folks on this board that don't care for e24s and those that love them. I appreciate everyone's insight here!

If you bought it from Terry, it should be a solid car. It's a beauty.

Looks nice. Hartges are a better fit than the style 5s too.

Thanks Chris, I think so too.

Agree 100% Greg. Let's work on that. Maybe someone will want to trade me a nice 745i for my burgundrot car with the 745i drivetrain?

It seems like a really solid car. It is very rust free from what I can tell after taking a closer look. It needs a lot of love but that's part of the fun!

This came out way back in the day when I worked for Terry Sayther. Funny how time flies when you're having fun. Song holds up pretty damn well, IMHO, and it's apropos.
