Ok, I'm probably going to stir up a hornets nest with this one.. but here goes:

I own a pretty red '87 535is. In a matter of weeks it's going to have the full M-tech treatment, springs, shocks, body kit.. etc. Basically everything that "defines" an M535i, except the instrument cluster with the "M", my car will have.

Is the M-badge police going to kick my ass if I decide to remove the "535is" and put a solo "M" on instead, a la the M535i? After all, it *is* the US counterpart of the M535i.... and it's the same engine as the "kat" M535i.

It is your car, put anything you want on it. Why should putting the badge on be any different than putting on the body kit? The people that don't consider it a real M535i will just have to deal with it. Let anyone who gives you anymore than a good natured teasing over it kiss your ass, because they are way too uptight. I admit to getting a little huffy when I see a clapped out 318i with a M logo on it, it seems lame as hell, but it ain't worth losing sleep over. You are putting a load of effort into doing your car up right, and damn few people will know that is is not a "real" M-car. Enjoy it guilt-free.

How about: "M535i?"

Don't know where you'd find the question mark, though.

Doesn't matter what others think, but you'll get real tired of explaining to people that it's not a real M535i, to do otherwise would be to lie, and you'd not do that I'm certain. :D

Not only that, but since the 535is was one of the most desireable 5-series of it's day in the US, I'm pretty pleased to own mine.
