I know this has been beat to death many times,
but does anyone use the m roadster (or whaterver it is) shift lever in their e28 m5 ?

I recall Tim enchanter said it "ended up where reverse is",
but then he had just started repping UUC around that time.....

I'd LOVE a UUC, but wallet tells me to check out the budget buy...

I have the MZ3 (M roadster) shifter in my '84 eta, and I love it. It did move the knob position like 3/4 of an inch, but it's actually in a better place for me than the stock one. I know I don't have an M5, but the result is the same in any e28. Steve Haygood can set you up with a shifter, he'll make sure you get the right stuff. Clay Tycksen's writeup (http://www.tycksen.com/bmw/tech/mz3_shifter/index.php) is awesome, with the writeup the install can be done in 30-45 minutes.

I used an E36 M3 lever in my e28. Same positioning as the MZ3 lever but a little longer throw. I didnt like the way neutral was suddenly up towards the front and the reach was longer, so I just had the selector rod shortened by about 1/4 inch which brought it back to center. Loved it then.

I just installed a UUC lever in my M5. Love it. Smooth shorter shifts and looks good. I had thought that the lever would be significantly shorter, but it is not. Shorter, yes. Nonetheless, I do like it and also like the UUC aluminum knob that I put on it.

All in all I would say it was worth it.

I put the M-roadster on my 84 633 tranny, Way short throw, but nothcy. I like it a lot but the effort to shift into gear takes more force(my arm was sore for the first day or so)

My new to me M5 came with the UUC shifter. It is a little stiff when going around town and you aren't trying to go anywhere. But when you feel like going through the gears it makes all the difference compared to stock.

I have driven an E24 with some Z3-variant lever and it seemed nice, but required more effort than the UUC for not much shorter throws and the gears seemed to be in a different position from what I remember. The UUC setup seems about right, I was about to put one in my 535i before it was totaled after talking a bit at 5erFest with Argun (he works for UUC).

Try giving the guys at UUC a call and mention 5erFest, they seem very in tune with enthusiasts and Argun mentioned a steep discount for 5erFest attendees. Worth a shot!
