recently had the airflow meter spring come unspun (while driving)
no start after shutdown, regardless of vain attempt to return to original position.
anyone know of specific resistance values for each position of the gate?

Have you pulled and cleaned the plugs? If the spring unwound then you went to a full rich condition and the plugs fouled for sure. S38 engines are notorious for flouling plugs given the opportunity. Then after you replace the plugs.....have someone observe the AFM flap while you crank the engine , it should open about 1/8 of the way. If not ,either tighten or loosend the tension to get to that 1/8 position. Then adjust from there once you get it running. I guess you could send it to me and I could give it a little tweaking if all else fails

Wow..., what a drag..., what I would do is find someone with a thrashed AFM from a 535 or 633 or something, have them carefully unwind and count the revolutions. I know it's not going to be exact but at least it might get you back to square-one.., and then allow you to dial things in on a dyno.

AFM revived from what seemed like the dead.
and to top it off the euro M passed Smog (with the help from a couple of cats from an e32)

probably upset the emission untechnicians by popping the hood 10 feet out of the bay and restoring the normal settings under the hood and burning off about a thousand miles worth of rubber from the tires.
Nor are my neighbors happy that the moment the new tags went on the cats were cut off. and you know I just happened to have a couple pieces of pipe with the right bend on them that turned out nicely under the passengers door, I'll put the exhaust back on soon, but what a sound at 5000rpm on the highway!
