New owner
Greetings all.
I've been lurking for a while but figured it was time to make my first post since I picked up my "new" M5 on Saturday. I've only got 200 miles under my belt but I am completely hooked.
Car is in great shape and has right at 60k miles. Only mods thus far are a Dinan chip and cam but I'm sure that will be changing soon
I'm dropping it off at my mechanic's shop next week (it already passed a PPI prior to inspection) for a full check-up to see what all needs to be done in the near future. I have detected a small oil leak that will need to get checked at the very least. Anything big I should have looked at? I know about the timing chain guide issue so he's going to look at that too. Anything else worth investigating, just to be safe?
Thanks!

Congratulations and welcome!
In addition to the timing chain & guides, there are several other things that will prematurely end the life of a S38:
- Crank Hub -> Frank Fahey sells the upgrade. Now you can shift at redline without worry.
- AFM -> They are still available from BMW. Just replaced mine (no worries about running lean).
- Altitude Sensor -> Unplug this and wrap with electrical tape (yeah I know this is a shadetree fix). This can cause a lean running condition and detonate your motor. It is located on the inside of the passenger fender.
Post some pics!

Ah, I wondered when Blake would come over here and post! He dropped by my place on his way back from picking up the car and I snapped some pics. They're on my website under the "Friends Cars" section. Blake has to get me a writeup on the car though, and soon!
So now I've had a big hand in getting three friends to purchase rare BMW's! Jim Davis from firstfives bought an E34 M5 3.8 liter euro (1995, last month of production) that I sent him an ebay link to. I sent another ebay link to Mitch Brookhyser from firstfives about a Series I, 1972 Golf Yellow 3.0CSL that he ended up buying, and now Blake (again, a link from ebay) gets an E28 M5. Blake had seen the car on ebay before and was watching it, but when it didn't sell and popped up again later, I reminded him that it was still out there for the taking!

LOL, yes Adam played a huge part in helping me find my car and helping me keep my sanity through the search and purchase process. I don't think there has been an e28 M5 for sale in the continental US over the past year that he didn't forward to me
I'm working on getting some better pictures now that the car is clean. Of course since I washed the car on Sunday, it has decided to rain this week in Chicago (which it hasn't done in a few weeks now) so it may have to wait a few more days.
For the time being, feel free to check out the pictures at Adam's site above.
Thanks to all for the welcome!

Blake,
Welcome to the asylum.
Nice find on the M5, looks pretty nice based on the pics over on Adam's website. I see one thing that you MUST get Adam to correct. Unless your M5 has been repainted it's NOT Diamond Schwartz which is a metallic deep graphite grey color. All US/NA E28 M5s are Schwartz which is a non-metallic BLACK.

Congratulations on your M5. It looks like a fine example and it is nice to see it in the BMW M Registry (www.bmwmregistry.com). With the E28 M5 online community slowing down its nice to keep the M5s together in the registry.
Cheers,
