I just took my M5 to and from Atlanta from North Jersey. Between a side trip or two I put close to 1850 miles on the car. It used NOT EVEN a half a quart of oil, averaged 21.1mpg, got to as high as 140 an an open stretch of empty highway and performed flawlessly.

Looks like ole #7 is tight as can be at not 165k miles! I havent even had the thing a month and threw over 3,000 miles on it already! Yikes!

Great to hear about how trouble fre your new to you M5 is. One word of advice, if you don't have documented proof that the previous owner has had the timing chain components serviced, have it done ASAP. The cost of having this done might seem pricey (~$2000), but the alternative (expoded S38) is very expensive.

That's great. I just replaced the radiator in mine with one the leaked worse than the original. I haven't driven in it in almost two weeks. I wish I could take a trip like that. I'm glad yours went well.

Ouch!

Those Radiators are like $350... I'd just get a new one.

Rich,

Thanks. I've had to do the job on M88s before.. this uses the S38 with a double-row chain, they are quite reliable but I did give it a close inspection right when I bought it and it's in good shape.

If nothing else, I do own a shop that does nothing but BMWs.. I'm actually about to build up an S38 stroker to throw in another E28 I have :)

I'd recommend taking a real close look at it., more than you can do by taking off the cam cover and looking down the chain. I did the chain bits awhile ago on my S38 with 172k miles. I did it as a preventative measure, the car ran great otherwise. While the infamous plastic guide was still pretty flexible, the locating bosses were almost completely worn through. It didn't look like it would take too much longer for the guide to be blowing in the breeze.

That and I was amazed at how much quieter the engine is now. I can now hear the gearbox rattle in neutral that I haven't heard in ten years.

Didn't know you own a shop.

FWIW, I know more about the M88/3 than I want to know. The M88 from my Euro M5 is being rebuilt. One of the things being done is a conversion to the S38 dual row timing chain components.

Rich,

I know it technically needs it.. I'll probably get to it before 5erfest. At this very moment the car is on my lift and I am fighting to get the damned rear subframe bushings in it. I remember how much I actually hate doing this job.. arrgh.

The list for the car is as follows:

Reupholster front seats
Repair driver's seat frame (Usual broken weld on outer lower bolster support frame)
Dye the rest of the interior
Replace Dash
Finish putting a stereo worth listening to in it
Timing Chain
Valve adjustment
New Hoses
Clutch Slave Cyl
Lose the horrible Kumho 712s for Pirellis
Replace/Patch rockers (Typical Jacking Point Rust)
Have rear frame rail extensions/bumper shock mounting points replaced (Typical rust)
New Floormats
New door weatherstripping

That oughta keep me busy... plus I need to get my 525iT Turbo M52 engine finished and I just got this Euro 635csi to get on the road... oh and I have a 6-speed in the shop for the 740iL......

What's a free weekend again?
