Well I finally received the MAT sensor and installed it in the manifold. I pulled the CSV (as recommended) and tapped that hole for it. The sensor just about protrudes completely into the manifold although there is a little shrouding. What is good about the location is, the sensor will be getting direct flow of the air from the idle control motor (Electromotive).

I also drilled, tapped holes for five vacuum fittings. I now have six dedicated vacuum points on the bottom of the manifold. This will allow me to have dedicated vacuum lines for the RRFPR, boost gauge, waste gate, interior air temp sensor, boost controller and MAP sensor. I just need to port match the intake gaskets and the manifold can be installed. With that the engine is ready to go into the car.

I have removed the factory air box and coil brackets from the engine compartment. I plan on mounting the coil packs behind the fire wall panel next to the heater fan. I then need to order a custom set of wires (Magnacor) the will run from the coil pack directly to the spark plugs, only six needed. It is really cool to be rid of the distributor and coil.

Here are a few pictures of the engine with the various pieced dry fitted. I am very happy with the result. I had a vision of what I wanted and this is the first time all of the parts are together and I like it more that I anticipated.

WOW!

That is fantastic.

How did you do the black on the Cylinder head? is that powder coat, black Ceramic coat or VHT engine Black?

(you should have recast the timing cover so it is all nice and round LOL!

Yes, that would have been nice, I thought about the options. I installed a aluminum billet cover though.

The head has been powder coated. Nothing else will work and be a durable.

Just wait until the engine is completely assembled..................surprises to come.

Duke,

Who fabricated the distributor block-off plate and the timing bracket?

Henry who owns The Power Plant made both. The distributor cover even has "The Power Plant" pressed into it, which I am not happy about.

They were not cheap either.

just out of curiousity.. what is needed to make it rotor/cap-less and do the coil packs? or how does the signal to the packs work in terms of what the ECU puts out etc.. trying to learn more about how all this type of stuff works..

Looks pretty sweet! I'm curious about the turbo air intake pipe, and the big S bend it takes - it seems like it could go straight ahead from the turbo to the front of the car (where I presume there will be a cold air intake), but does it have to bend that way to get around other obstacles in the engine compartment? I don't have my car handy so I can't look under the hood to see what other stuff is in the way in that area.

Also, what's with the baby blue fanbelt pulley? :)

As the engine turns over, a sensor will count pulses off that dark blue toothed wheel bolted to the front of the crank, and send the signals to the ECU. The ECU counts the pulses and tells the coil packs to fire at the appropriate times during each revolution. I believe with the Electromotive system there are three coil packs (for a six cylinder engine), and each one is connected to two of the spark plugs. To adjust the timing, you make a few keystrokes on a laptop to advance or delay when the coils fire.

Think motor mount and air conditioner.

how does the ECU hook up to the individual coil packs?

oh my god that thing is beautiful duke!

i really think you should second guess installing it in your car and put it in a tube chasis car so we can see it from every angle.

Really outstanding work you've done assembling it and amazing work sweeny and todd. Beautiful, simply beautiful.

And i'd be pissed about the stamping on the rotor cover too. thats worse than when car lots put their sticker on the back of the car you are buying.

Hartge colors. The only M106 with a Hartge head that I know of.

The coil packs are wired to the ECU. I know what you are thinking and no, coil pack can not be made to work with Motronic. They are part of a complex and advance ECU system.

If I had known before powdercoating, I would have had it sanded down. It will not be that visible though. I will give Power Plant NO credit for my engine. If he really helps me if I get into problem with the TEC3, then maybe.

And thanks for the complements!!

This engine is the result of a lot of people helping with a lion share going to TCD and all of my funky requests.

you could put a rubber chicken sticker over the power plant logo :-)

oh yeah, what injectors are you going to run with that engine? and did you sell your apexi yet?

755 cc low imp, peak and hold. They CAN support 600 hp. Apexi was sold months ago.

my what big injectors you have :p (in a goldilocks voice). those will be nice man. i've been thinking about the apexi for my daily driver 535i but don't want to spend the money on new so i'll probably not do it.

i'm headed off to class again. later

I like your choice of colors on the crank assembly, with the big red cranknut in there it makes them ///M colors, very nice touch..... ;)

It is a shame to have to install that motor, it is beautiful just the way it is...
I say leave it out for all to enjoy...

going back to bed now....hehehehehhe

I am now going to go spend some alone time.
Working at a BMW shop, I see alot of nice things, but that is the FUCKING BEST BMW hard on I have ever had! Makes Dinan's twin turbo V12 look like a pile of lumpy dog shit.

Duke, TCD, Sweeney........Kudos!!

Thanks TT! Please don't compare my engine to anything the garage hack "Dinan" produces. ~0

I agree though.

Hey i just realised this?

Looking at your Car point site..not completly right through.

but, that is the Hartge Engine right?? so that is Euro spec 3.5 with the higher Comp pistons yeh?

yet most of the TCD packages seem to be going on the Low comp US motors with only 184bhp

Have you changed pistons? same engine.....Or shold i just keep reading through your site?

Go to page 9. The HC M30 block (not Hartge) is gone and I am using a M106 8:1 CR turbo block. Keep reading, lots of good info there.

Absolutely amazing Duke! Love all the documentation. Please keep it up as I am sure we are all learning a great deal!

Who will be tuning your TEC3? Is this something youll be doing yourself? We have Vic Sias here in the SF Bay Area and apparently he is the man with the TEC3s!

Me, me and just me..............................will welcome a phone life line. I have a base line BIN file from Henry from a turbo M30 that I will start with.
There is a shop near Frankfurt that is a TEC3 dealer. I hope to get the car running well and engine broken in before I take it to them for final tuning. I hope they have a dyno.

Have you ever looked at using a M10 uppertiming cover? As soon as I can find on I am going to see if it can be used as a distributor delete.

Since there are so many similarities between the M10 and M30 is it just a thought.
