Ahem... Maybe my our turbo 6er will be up there in the Hp #'s, its already close to the top of the list with broken parts. So far we are on our 2nd intercooler, 2nd turbo, 3rd blow off valve, 2nd clutch, and thats with it being driven only about 60 miles. Who else here is over 400 wheel hp at the moment?

Is there a catagory for most homemade parts in the car? Most throttles per valves? Most turbo 6ers that you couldn't finish for 5erFest?

Duke, TCD, all others....you'll be IN FOR IT when I paint my calipers yellow and put on my spoiler! Those upgrades, in addition to the stickers I've already purchased on ebay, will put me towards the 600-625 hp range minimum. Let's not even talk about drag racing-the 6" muffler will make you cry before we even get to the starting line!!

In all seriousness, it looks like Duke's car has a very good chance of #1. Although 27lbs of boost is quite a lot, couldn't Duke raise his boost as well, although temporarily, for a dyno run? He wouldn't necessarily have to keep the car in the usual street setup, unless that's what you agreed to beforehand. Just a thought.

i wont reveal my turbo secrets for my e28 :p just wait a few months and then we will talk. im pretty sure that in a few months therer will be quite a few new turbos running around with some numbers.

tcd- what is your price on a water-air IC setup? i would be interested in one.

Knowing what I know about various projects, I think it'll shake out like this.

HP:

Duke (with that head plus TEC3 plus high psi will be tough to match)
TCD
Sweeney
Chris M (c'mon, chris, put that damn thing back together, will you??)

Broken parts:

Duke (with that head plus TEC3 plus high psi I think he'll break about every driveline component imaginable at one point or another)
Chris M (the king of the shattered piston, note that this only applies if he actually gets his 5 cyl wonder running again . . . )
TCD (already broken a bunch of stuff, so his car is pretty well sorted and strengthened)
Sweeney (reiforces before stuff breaks, not after, and doesn't tell many people when it does break (which I would imagine is quite rare), so even if he doesn't have the fewest failures, he'll definitely have the fewest people know about it, lol)

Many thanks for resurrecting this forum...lots of good exchange here.

It's been an long road getting this motor running right. Yes, I too have suffered the loss of pistons collapsing under the pressure of detonation. Even with Electromotive controlling fuel/timing, things break when you push too hard. Just a word to the wise...

Right now I'm laying low due to some job setbacks, but the car pulled a respectable 330 hp a few weeks back at around 12-13 psi. I know the GT-35/40 can push mid-twenties with a fair amount of efficiency, but I just can't risk a meltdown right now. Programming is still weak, running a bit fat with starting/idle issues to iron out. I think there are still some bottle necks in the intake plumbing, notably the throttle body, so getting better flow at the lower boost pressures is my goal right now. I think 100 rwhp/liter is doable at less that 15 psi. Short -term: around 380 hp for the for the bored M-30 at less than 1 bar.

Alpina used the 745 head with bigger valves (I think.) New pistons were made for a mid-eight compression ratio.

The jewel of the setup is the custom exhaust mainfold, really. Somewhere, awhile back I read an tech article on the concept of something I think was called "positive cross-over." Anyway, it talked about how, through the use of a tuned, equal length header-style exhaust manifold, builders could achieve intake pressures in excess of exhaust pressures. Yea, try to get your head around that one. Long story short, the car went down for a year while a 204SS header was built. The GT was fitted, Tial wastegate, 3 in. exhaust and a recently upgraded Spearco A/A heat sink added.

Once things settle down with the finances, I'm looking forward to throwing the car around a bit at Willow Springs, a track about a half hour from the house. Should be fun.

I would not count me out of this race I am already over 300 rwhp at 10psi none inner cooled running a little rich and stock plugs. I am going to try hard to hit 400 rwhp at 15psi and that is with the stock engine management with the TCD chip.
Before the year is over I will be pushing 400-500rwhp

Hey all, I'm a new poster to this forum. I have an e28 m5. I just pulled my s38 and i have a fresh dinan turbo m88 waiting to go in. I'm waiting on a couple parts from Jim at Autobahn and some aluminized firewall heat protection I ordered. The motor is rated at 468hp @ 12.5 psi. I'm running the split second MAF sensor conversion so i should make even a little more power. I think im going to limit boost to 15psi. I'll eventually be running a MAP sensor, water injection, and a more efficient intercooler setup so i should be up in the runnings for this HP Contest. Should be a runner in the next month or so. :D

I've been following this thread, I have been thinking Duke would be the leader, but now that Ken H has released details about "Lucifers Hammer" I'd say he will be the hands down winner for big hp with Duke coming in second!

I wonder if Zane Coker, our E12-torch-carrier will ever get involved in this turbo circle? He's pretty modest, but he told me recently the car is putting out about 800 at the crank. Problem is he can rarely use it because of the footprint of the rear tires. And he said he can feel it twist the body "like a rag". I'd like to have seen him bring it to 5er Fest and show the car off. Maybe if I come to the 2006 5er Fest (I'm setting a goal for myself dammit!) I can haze him into coming.

I never did get a ride in the damn thing when I did that Roundel article since it was frickin' raining!

I think he had the turbo reworked (again) by some guys that build Buick Grand National turbos. He said it is noticably stronger and he guessed it might be pushing 800 at the crank. The dyno graph I saw where it did 650 at the wheels according to Zane was done in the neighborhood of 28psi of boost. He doesn't normally run that around the street since 12 pounds will blow almost anything away.

He has new wheels and tires on the car in an effort to get a bigger footprint under it. I think the rears are 245's now, which is still tiny compared to the power output.

Zane's also moonlighting as a advisor/mechanic for a local Toyota Supra race team so I'm sure he's honing his skills even further there using their parts budget. I think the car they race runs in the 8 or 9 second range and is a 1500hp, methanol, turbo Toyota inline 6. I don't know all the details though, that's what I remember from Zane's latest update email.

Zane's also helping a friend out by building a milder turbo M30 in the guy's 635.

I just went to Zane's site and he posted an update in April on his message board with some dyno stats. I was wrong, it wasn't 800 horse, but he's getting close. Here's what he wrote up:

Many people have asked me about the strength of the M30 engine platform, or what it is capable of, or its maximum allowable power level. There are not too many out there who have tested these engines into the huge power/boost territory. Most of what Ive seen are estimations with no other vital supporting engine data. Here is an actual 32bit (200bits per second) data-log which shows the BMW M30 (or M90) at its' best:

BOOST.................32psi(sustained)
RPM...................5492 (8000 max)
Intake Temp...........117.6 F
Timing................15.3 degrees
AFR (Wide Band).......11.0
Throttle (TPS)........66%

Power at this run: 723BHP/692ft/lbs Torque

As most will note, the most common engine parameters are not stressed at all---there is plenty more to go! Impressive is the relaxed state of the data at such a high boost level. This data run was on 110 octane fuel with water/meth injection. Had to stop due to smoking tires at such high power/speeds :o)

Everything on his engine is costum build so it isn't suprising he reached 600+ hp

I've seen alpina biturbos reach the 600+ too with not much costum build parts, just bigger turbos and engine managemant and some little stuff.

From wich engine is the m90 block?

todd im sure you have it wrapped up. dukes engine sounds nice as a nat/asp. but all the intake/ head work will not make up for boost. there is a reason that turbos are not allowed in f1 (remember the 80's 2.0L turbos 1200-1500hp!). maybe duke can spin that thing to 1200rpm (would get the prize for broken parts for sure) ~0
i hope have the little red one running soon. the first step will require the boost limit remove chip and adj fuel press reg. can you help on these?

Check that info on F1 turbo engines, it's 1400hp from 1.4l displacement
