Had a car full of 12yr old girls in the e30 on the way to a birthday party. (Stop that ! You need to see a doctor).
They always want to take that car because it's an adventure compared to their parent's appliances and they marvel at how small, low and loud it is.
I've been working on the interior bits here and there and when someone pulled out in front of me on the way to the party the girls demanded I honk at them. I grabbed the horn button from the dashboard where it has been for about a month and handed it around saying: "You do it"! They really went nuts laughing and hopefully I created some more "old car" lovers.

Went for a drive today and ended up in Garretson and Devil's Gulch for a little exploring. Interesting place; prairie and farmland all around it, but the creek passing through this spot flows through huge cracks in the granite, falling about 40' in a pretty short distance. Many acres around the site have been preserved as a park; heavily wooded with hiking trails all around the site. Local legend has it that Devil's Gulch is the spot where Jesse James evaded a pursuing posse after robbing a bank by jumping his horse across a ~15' wide ravine. The posse wasn't quite as motivated to jump as he was I guess. I don't think anything in the park has been changed since I was a kid.
Emily did the driving (in her e36 Compact), I was riding shotgun, and she's still teasing me for sticking my arm out the window & flying my hand in the wind. That's just as much fun as it was when I was a kid.

A Hungarian wine from 1990 (Chateau Megyer Tokaji) vs. a South Australia 1987 Penfold's Semillon.
Both corks had almost turned to dust when opened and I know the true oenophiles are lashing backwards at the age of both contenders thinking that they are well past their prime. Fear not, for they are both righteous, and they are spectacular.
I will keep you posted but I'm starting to realize now why Hungary is no longer a country.

Ever since my latest trek to the other side of the pond I've been obsessing over the beer that was served by one of the vendors at the show (after-hours, of course.) All I knew was the name, from the tap and the glasses in which it was served.
It was hands-down the best beer I have ever had. Period. End of story. Since returning though I've been trying to get a line on a supply over here... Not so easy. Thought I had it licked, by finding a store in Minneapolis that sells through their website, but my first stab was a miss. I ordered three 750ml bottles of Gouden Carolus Classic, thinking that's what was served at the show. The package arrived today, and I popped open a bottle tonight; no cigar. It was good -- very good, in fact -- but it wasn't what I remember. A little more bitter, a little less fruity, definitely not it. After a couple of glasses, I got a good buzz on, and did a little more research... Ordered a couple of bottles of Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van de Keizer Blauw; pretty sure that's the one.
If not, well, I'll get a few more buzzes out of it anyway. In the meantime, I'll continue sifting through the stock that the local shops carry to see if I can find an equal. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it.
I think I'm becoming a beer snob. Is that a bad thing?

On my way to work today I saw two guys alongside the road, not far from the bus terminal. One was a rather portly native American guy in a wheelchair and the other was a skinny white guy pushing the chair; I thought that looked like an awful lot of work, and since I was driving the wife's van, I figured it would be a kind turn to offer them a lift. Turned around, pulled up next to them and asked if I could give them a ride somewhere; "Sure!" The portly guy could walk a little, so they piled in and I loaded the wheelchair in the back. "Where to?" "Skyway Liquors," a liquor store about a mile away and up a decent sized hill. Uh oh. They were already smelling of alcohol and wanted to go get some more. At 9am.
As we were driving, the portly guy chatted about coming to Sioux Falls to help his girlfriend, who is blind, and about how her relatives are treating her badly. When I pulled in the driveway at Skyway, the portly guy said I could just use the drive-up window, and I'm thinking, great, where will we go after that? He asks the gal in the window for a 30-pack of IceHouse beer and hands me $20 to pass along to her. He must've bought there before, because the total came to $19.25. "Where to next?" "Sioux Falls Inn," a dive hotel a couple blocks from the bus terminal where they are living. So I drove them there, dropped them off & wished them a good day.
They appreciated the ride, but now I feel like an enabler. And to top it off, the battle going on inside me -- the beer snob vs. the cheapskate -- got kicked up a few notches... Just last night I spent $18.21 on a four-pack of some dark ale I had never heard of much less tried. Here I could have had 30 cans for about a buck more. I can't say I've ever tried IceHouse, but I'm pretty sure I know what it tastes like... The cheapskate in me is having convulsions; pretty sure he's losing.

Soooo, I've been hauling around a rear red plastic bumper for an e30 for about 5 years. i was going to chop it and paint it bronzit, but ended up selling the car. Fast forward to late '10, i help a guy get a red 'ix. I then encourage him to upgrade to plastics since it's a bolt on swap, and i know where to get a red front bumper for cheap. I acquire the bumper, then he wrecks the car. He offers it and some cash to me in trade for my 535iA.
Now, my e28 was painted fire engine red in someone's backyard 6 months before i purchased it. Red overspray EVERYWHERE. I can't throw anything away, so even though i switched to euros years ago, i have red oversprayed bumper stuff everywhere.
So, yesterday, when I'm trying to get the plastic bumpers on the e30, I can't find the front bumper shocks. I give up, grab the rest of the parts, set them aside, and start cleaning up. I start throwing stuff away. I throw away some bumper shocks with red overspray on them. I don't really think about it too much.
I clean up some more during the day, then decide to just rock the rear plastic for now.
I'm tossing and turning last light, then the power goes out. More time to think, can't sleep. This morning, it's bugging me too much. I go dumpster diving and can't find the damn shocks! I KNOW I threw them away AFTER the trash guy came, where are they? Hey, there's a box in the trash.
Pull out one shock. Find the other nearby (at bottom of dumpster), then I grab the phone and type the pn into realoem. Sure enough, they are the right ones.
Jeez.
Now to install the FRONT plastic.

And BTW...
Sounds like fun.L-arginine...can cause some side effects such as diarrhea...and there is a concern that L-arginine might make herpes worse. There is some evidence that L-arginine is needed for the herpes virus to multiply.
I was awoken by someone pounding on my door at 3:45 AM this morning. The flashing lights out front did not bode well.
Turns out some kid was out breaking into cars on my street. The cops were cruising by and saw him in my e34. The only thing of value in the car was the stereo and he didn't have time to tear it out. For some reason I forgot to lock my doors, which is actually a good thing. One of my neighbors had a small window busted out on his nissan, but nothing was really missing from it either.
Stupid kid.

Throw me in the brier patch, Br'er Fox . I had to take the ferry to Nantucket for an inspection. A 20 minute job that took a day. I sat on a bench under a tree on a brick sidewalk outside of a sculptor's shop reading a book until it was time. Down the street , across from the intersection, was the Jared Coffin House. Marina and I honeymooned there Feb 3rd,1973. Then back to the dock for the return to Hyannis.
Dennis Conner was in front of me at the Point Loma BevMo this morning. He tried to have me thrown out of the SDYC clubhouse in 1987 and on June 4th 1988 he tried to get the Harbor Police to arrest me (and yes I still hold a grudge). He still is a HUGE douchebag. He was having a hissy fit because the cashier couldn't calculate in her head what the price per ounce was of the tequila he was buying. He actually said (and i swear i'm not making this up) "I demand to see the manager".
