The day has finally come that I can officialy say that the S2 is finished. Except for some nit picky mechanicals and interior work the big push is over. It is now a reliable driver after many hours of getting things sorted out.
Like any project, it will never be completely done. I've still got to get the boost control hooked up, LM1 permanantly installed (not totally sure on this one yet) and a few other gizmos that are in the works.....but dammit, it's done. I'm not joking when I say that I'm ready to sit down and cry. The culmination of a pile of hard work and a ton of determination to see it through means this is much more than simply a car to me. It was the first to-the-tub project I have done and represents a big chunk of my life over the past couple of years.
I'm not up to posting photos but if someone were kind enough to do so for me I'd love to let everyone see what I've been busting my balls on for the last 2 years.
Thanks for the bandwidth :p

Right now the intended use is simply to drive the thing. It's close to getting completely dialed but there's still room for improvement in the AFR department. BIR has open strip nights and I'd like to get it down there to run a few 1/4 miles but it's no priority.
Next week the beast goes back to the body shop for the final wet sanding/buff out, door alignment tweaking and the installation of fender flares, then a beautification project for the engine bay takes place, stereo install as well. Before anyone gives me shit about the ricer drivers seat seen in the photos , I have to say that it's really comfortable....for me anyway. The Sport seat was shot and this was a cheap alternative.
This car was a $400 wonder that I got in Ohio. It ran but everything was prett much shot. It was rust free but had led a hard life owned by a college girl..... lots of parking lot dents and an altercation with a mailbox down the drivers side.
The list of fun includes:
To the bare metal.
New doors, fenders
2 paint jobs (the first one got F'd up and had to be pulled off)
Transplanted interior from an IS (blue to black)
Bil. sports on all 4 corners
H&R springs
e32/34 big brakes
Earle's brake lines
poly filled sub frame bushings/diff mount
adjustable trailing arm bushings
3:73 lsd
3k stall speed converter
S2
Turbonetics boost control
cockpit adjustable AFR control (not up yet, but soon)
Grunt bushings up front
M5 steering box
Borbet E's (may be wrong on the letter here)
Yoko AVES 100s: 225x16's....the jury is out on these
euro bumpers, lights w/the rear valance done right
glass roof
real shadowline trim
M5 tail lights
sway bars ala Bledsoe
Todds tower braces
LM1
I'm sure much has been forgotten and this list is really nothing that many other owners haven't done to their cars.
I can't say enough about the auto and revaned converter. It's like nothing I've driven or ridden in before. Todd does a better job explaining it. It's like the engine stays at a certain RPM at full boost and the car accelrates into it.....almost like a constant velocity transmission. It's a wierd sensation but holy crap does it work!
All in all it's been a fun project that will probably never be completely done!
What John said. To get proper AFR's my spring is wound pretty tight, affecting response. I tried other AFM's and had the same issues. This way I don't need to crank the heck out of the spring and can tune on the fly. It's cheap to do. I think the pots were about 5 bucks at Radio Shack.
Well,
I question the useful ness of this mod. The spring tighting is so the flapper won't be 100% open at low throttle input(runing in the part throttle map). The AFM is ignored at WOT, so I'm not seeing how this helps in tuning? I know what it is your doing, but the loss of throttle responce is kinda a necassary evil if you keep the AFM.
Also, the DME runs open loop as soon as you get past 50% flapper opening(your into accel enrichment). I think you guys are over-thinking this, and un-necassarily adding complexity.

Russ, you're correct. For whatever reason, my AFM had to be tightened around 2 complete turns from stock to get the AFR's anywhere close to correct. It is way too tight. I've tried 2 AFM's and have had the same issue with both. It takes a large amount of effort to get it to swing open and is making a difference in lower RPM response.
Doing this does not mean there will be no spring tension at all. The idea is to put it back to stock. WOT isn't really the issue since AFR values are spot on at around 4000rpm.
The intent is not to be constantly making adjustments. It will simply provide for proper AFRs and negate the need for a tightly wound spring, something that my car seems require. If it doesn't work I'm not out much and nothing will have been irrevocably altered. Until I get MS installed it's a good/cheap way to keep things where they need to be.

OK, do you have the chip from TCD, what size injs are you running? I pressume there the S2 kit spec, but I can't remember what Todd sells with the S2 now?
It's got the TCD chip and 30# injectors.
Some cars have required only a few notches of tightening to the AFM, some none at all. For whatever reason mine needs a lot. Once MS is installed it's all a moot point anyway. I'm waiting till Fall on that.
Okie Dokie I will stop trying to debug.
