My cylinder head is currently completely apart, and while in generally good condition, the camshaft is worn and will need to be replaced. My eventual intention is to get a turbo (probably TCD) and am wondering if I ought to replace the camshaft with anything other than the standard one. I do not want a lopey idle, and I rather like low end torque. I do not want my engine to be unreasonably peaky either.

TIA

i have been told that for our motors (the m30) the stock camshaft isabout the best you can get. jason huff had a metric mechanic cam on his 335is turbo before he wrecked it. the cam was designed for an NA motor but he said it also worked very well with the turbo. maybe someone here (todd or sweeney) can shed some more light on the metric mechanic cam.

The hot upgrade is the M30-b33 cam from any 3.3l high compression engine. It's a 274deg cam, and is perfect for turbo applications. See Todd dyno runs with that cam in his now ex-733i turbo car, it's a thing of beauty. Nice flat torque to 5600rpm, and made 333whp with out a sweat. Retains all the stock idle and mid rpm niceties of a stock M30 engine.

754i with 274 cam dyno

ah yes, that sounds familiar now! Is there more than one camshaft that came in the b33? Is this just the standard one I would get from worldpac for a 1984 533i?

Umm, I don't know that. AHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh......
Or, just get one from a dismanteler, if you can fine one in good condition, thats the real cheap way.
There are two listed in the ETK, I'm sure theres only minor differences between them, and not enough to make a large performance difference:

01 CAMSHAFT 1 (Up To 01/1984) 11311271986 $438.20
01 CAMSHAFT 1 (From 01/1984) 11311289868 $438.20
