I detonated a dime size hole in the piston of my Alfa... Sounds kinda like FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKSHITSHITSHIT.
Funny thing was, I wasn't anywhere near redline, 5mph UNDER the speed limit, etc. It wasn't the sound so much as the cabin filling with smoke and oil streaming up the windshield that told me something was VERY wrong.

Like you've got marbles bouncing around in the combustion chamber.

Kinda sounds like BBs in a coffee can, but the above descriptions are also very good. Once you do hear it though, you'll probably recognise it.

The "marbles bouncing around in the combustion chamber" sound is indeed one of the sounds of pinging/detonation, but at low RPM and high throttle settings it can also sound like a brick bouncing off the insides of a wood box.
