Nothing major, so you can have your click back if you want it, but I finally got the 545i running again after blowing up the turbo en route to 5er Fest. Yeah, it was a long time ago but discouragement and saving up money for the center section kept the project on the back burner. Got the section from Melett in four days and it went in real easy. Took care of a few other details while there leaking or missing exahust gaskets, cooling fan ducting, etc. What was also replaced was the oil return hose. The BMW dealer wanted 65.00 for the BMW part. A frickin 3 inch length of hose, mine was seeping oil so I brought it to a generic wheel bearing place and they had the high temp oil proof silicone hose for $2.12.
Took it out yesterday and ran it for a good while in the heat. It did decent for the 6 lbs worth of stock boost. We will find out how much more it can take once I start cranking on the wastegate. What also had me confused was a rich while running issue. It was related to the FPR being left at the 3.0 and not being replaced with the 2.5 bar unit. With 30# injectors it was just a little too much fuel. It went through a full tank in less than 150 miles. It is always the little details.
Hopefully once I replace the Moronic with the Megasquirt this winter she will behave a little better.

I have an 059 box. Got rid of the M106 stuff long ago, no more mag valve, or knock box or any of the related things, except for the Saab APC stuff, and that pretty much lets it climb up to where it wants to until it starts pinging.

That's the way to do it! Ray - I'm really wanting to look into hybrid internals for our K27s. Our stuff is 25 years old and we need something newer inside. My turbo is only 40k miles new and still has no shaft play. But the day will come when I have to replace my stuff as well. Is there anywhere we can find out what kind of garrett/whatever guts we can fit into our k27 turbos?

I stand by my statement. I am running this turbo because at $300 and BRAND NEW, and it bolts up w/o mods, ill run it. Ive had my eye on making a different manifold and turbo setup for a while, but until I do, Ill stand by these expensive, harder to find, 3000rpm lag turbos. But. I dont care, because at 7lbs, any turbo makes the car go faster.
p.s. these turbos are good, but are old for the times and better turbos are on the market for not much more. nothing against the system that powers my e28.

For folks with slow $ the stock M30 (059 controls) with a 745 manifold and K27 compressor is the easy and fast way to get their foot in the door with some positive pressure.

For folks with slow $ the stock M30 (059 controls) with a 745 manifold and K27 compressor is the easy and fast way to get their foot in the door with some positive pressure.
Building a flange won't be too easy - we're screwed for space down there and you know it. Unless you can find some dude to drill some powerful nice holes without the risk of cracking the manifold... we're screwed.
The only thing we can really do is make a hybrid with an equivilent garrett core - I know people have done it - Anybody know which core to use? Scottie?

I believe any of the turbo houses like Garret Research, Turbonetis, Texas Turbo ect can tell you what internals will go into the old K27 745i turbo. But, with that said, the housing on the that tubo is pretty large, and thats one of the issues.

"Slow money" nothing. I tried the engine with the 745i Moronic set up and the M106 feels better and is more economical with the 059 set up. This was after chasing all of the supposed vacuum leaks and adjusting/testing sensors. With the 059 it is plug in and go.

I made a simple economic-only point. I made no comment about comparative performance. Please allow me to re-state my point again however: By far the cheapest and arguably the fastest/easiest way for any stock M30 owner to get started on positive pressure is to purchase and install a good, used 745 manifold and K27 unit. Everything else can be stock M30 stuff (injectors, FPR, ECU, even the intake boot!!). Heck; even if you had a decent flowing N/A exhaust you could use it (although I would not recommend it). I'm still just making a primarily economic point here.
Aside: As a controls engineer I'd say sticking with the 059/stock controls is the obvious choice for those in that situation. Stock US version controls are cheap, readily available, modifiable(059 anyway), very very simple, has available broad knowledge base, etc., etc..
PS - I may be a jet engine controls engineer, but I am still certainly short on $ so I'm speaking from experience there. Also, I did not mean to imply in any way that those running some 745 stuff are cheap, dumb or poor. I was merely responding directly to the quoted script.

Just playing. Don't worry, it's tough to upset alot of us here - we're usually pretty easy going.
But yes, the 745i setup is the cheapest way to get postive manifold pressure - but not the most effective.
