Interesting Bmw is Going back to...

Nice. Testing in Cali would indicate to me that they're seeing if they can get it to run on Cali's craptacular fuel. RussC has indicated that the fuel out there is a big holdback for a turbo setup.
I was thinking about my earlier comment. A small HP bump over N/A (30% ) might indicate that the system is capable of much much more with simple tuning.

Hey, that spy shott link doesn't work?
Anyway, the factory turbo package is a "tuners dream car". Look at at the Audi, Supra, MB, hell the Mini SC and Porsche turbo stuff for comparison. It's way easier to engineer hp from an existing FI car than a NA car. I believe IF it happens, youll see the # of BMW tuners blossom. Which is good for BMW I believe.
Only a 72hp bump you say , you'll see tuners within months of the release with a software, pipes and exhaust package bumping hp to 430hp!!!! Within a year complete upgrade packages bumping power to 500hp+ I'll bet, just like Audi tuners.
On Cali gas, I can only run 13psi. When I blended a tank of race 93 with 91 pump 50/50, the system ran 17psi without a hitch, you tell me the difference, I'd say at least 15% with proper tuning for like a Sunoco 93.

Russ, do you use your E28 Turbo as a daily driver? I wondered because if you didn't, it might make more sense to just put in race gas and pay the $5/gallon. Actually that was the price I heard before gas spiked ... maybe it's over $6 now?
Regarding BMW and turbos, yes, I was rather surprised to read that. BMW has really dug a hole with their holier than thou "naturally aspirated" talk in the last few years, so I guess they will have to invest some marketing dollars to spin this one. Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche have been embracing turbos for years and BMW has thumbed their noses at them.

I use it enough that race gas don't work finacially.
The BMW line since the 745i was and has been straight from the engineers mouths "we don't like the way forced induction makes the car feel". The problem is that in BMWs steed fastness, they have become the most heavily fined car company in the world(for many years running) for not making the US CAFE standards.

Heh, I read about the "335i" on Bimmerforums about 2-3 months ago... my buddy Joe has a 97' M3 that is fully made for track events... I told him:
Tj: "Did you hear BMW is going back to turbos? They're coming out with a 335i to make up for the gap between the new V8 M3 and the 330i"
Joe: "Dude, BMW never made a turbo car."
Tj: "HAHA! Dude I will bet you money right here right now that they did"
Joe: "Dude I'm pretty certain that there was no BMW that rolled off the lot with a turbo on it"
Tj: "So what about the 2002tii? What about the 524td? What about the 745i??"
Joe: "Those were aftermarket man, nobody got those with turbos from BMW"
Tj: "Holy crap dude.... go do some more research, you don't know anything about BMW before 1995....."
Joe: "I will, and I'll prove you wrong"
Next time I asked him about it.... he had no comment :p
ANYWAY -- I think it's awsome that BMW is doing that! Hopefully the new turbo 3 series will be easily expandable kinda like the VW 1.8t's that only need a chip to unlock another 50+ hp. MMMMMMmmmmm I want one now
