Winter Projects?
Okay now that the snow is flying - in the North East anyway, what are the big Winter projects going to be for you guys? My car is a toy car so I don't drive it in the Winter time. I usually pull it apart about now and it stays apart until next Spring. This winter I'll be putting in the Motec system I have finally. I will be using the stock harness for the most part and adapting the Motec to it. The 30lb injectors I have will be going in too. I'm going to work on a W/A intercooler as well. Of course there is the typical oil leak or two that I'll try to take care of too.
You guys got any big ideas this Winter?? Anyone else park their junker for the Winter? I know TCD has some plans to flip the whole drive train in his e28. I know he doesn't park his stuf but likes to do some good R&D when it is good and cold outside.

I just hope mine will be ready for next Spring!
I'm turbocharging my 88 535i with an Holset HX-35 from a Dodge Ram Cummins diesel truck with the help of a custom manifold adapter. Intercooled with an air/air intercooler and fed with 43lb/hr injectors from a dsm; I have planned to use the 60mm dsm throttle body as well ( unless I find out the stock one is bigger ). Fuel and ignition duties are to be controlled with a Megasquirt computer and Stealth/3000GT wasted spark coils conversion. I've got all the parts, just need to install them!
As for the exhaust, an electric cutout will be installed and I plan to use a Flowmaster 50 series ( or something quieter, good flow isn't critical here because of the cutout ) with dual outlet and run piping behind each rear wheels for that muscle car look!
I bought that car last spring but almost never drove it! It became a turbo project from the get go but only started working on it in September.

325i
It's gettting Megasquirt fuel/spark and a new harness. Otherwise it is basiclly finished. Currently running 15/16psi.
535i
It's getting a stock but newer shortblock, a JH Custom built tranny ( ), 4.10LSD 40% (thanks Eric), and tranny cooler. I am also swapping the exh housing from .69 to .58 and hoping for 13/14psi from a launch. I am building two Compomotive wheels for my 26x10.5 MT ET Drag Slicks. 185/65s were just mounted on the e30 M3 wheels for the front. The drag setup will drop ~40lbs of unsprung weight from my street setup.
Also hoping to install a stereo that I can actually hear when driving with the windows down. I have a new Bass Pump and some old amps to install.

winter project is to save enough money for the march/april project. that project includes the following (as of right now):
je pistons
mls 8.0:1 cr head gasket
arp head studs
b33 cam
mild street port
t61 or gt35r turbo (possibility)
i am looking to run upwards of 20 psi and make some stupid power numbers. probably gonna stick with this 60-1 turbo and see where that gets me with these mods before spending $1200 on a new turbo.

My 528i is getting a new headgasket and a better than worn-out stock cam and some better than really wasted rockers. I'll smooth out some rough spots in the head and on the pistons before bolting it together. Compression is about 9.4:1 and there's little I can do about that without investing money. This project does not encourage spending money.
I'll use M5 380 cc injectors, possibly with increased fuel pressure that will raise the limit to 450 crank hp.
A manifold adapter will be built, but if I get help there might be a tubular manifold in the works.
The clutch I will use includes a pressure plate from an S38 3.6 litre and I'm using a stock clutch plate to begin with, it should hold for my hp goals.
The turbo is a Holset H2C (58/72 mm in/out) with a 25 cm^2 turbine housing, works fine on my buddies M10 so I'll give it a try. The compressor is the size of the smaller HX40 and the turbine is identical to the smaller HX50 axle. It's nice to have some options, friends of mine have 19 and 22 cm^2 housings that fit my H2C. The turbo itself has seen about 1 million kms so it needs some brushing up but the bearings and wheels looked ok when I took it apart - that is the important part. Diesel truck turbos are the shit!
The wastegate is a custom made one with an intake valve from some V8 (50+ mm) and about 20 mm stroke.
The dump valve / blow-off is a custom made unit with a 50 mm piston, amazing how fast you can make one with the right equipment.
I've got a FMIC that needs some work on the end tanks but should be easy to fit in front of the radiator but inserted from below to make the pressure pipes clear the subframe.
Engine management will be VEMS (www.vems-group.org) with a custom harness, everything related to L-jetronic will be ditched. I'll only use one ignition driver and the stock coil, direct-fire might be added next year if I decide to build a proper engine. Then I'll use bigger injectors as well which in combination with a lumpier cam means that a cam sync sensor might come in handy to get a nice idle.
My goal is to get 350 whp or so with about 1 bar boost, it's going to be my daily driver so I'm really looking forward to it.

speaking of junk, the M5 is stored in the garage for winter..jk
the M30, tranny and diff along with everything that goes with has been pulled. Ill tear it all down soon and rebuild. Put the setup into my e30 and hope to get 300-350 whp boosted.
my e30
the motor as i pulled it
and the single bolt that held it to the hoist...
