Fricking Wastegate nut!

I know, I know-I need to invest in a Bentley. But since I am parting my 745i, it's not worth it. Anyway, there are two (?) nuts holding the wastegate on, and I can't get one of them off. After a few hours of taking stuff off, I couldn't manage to get the nut off with my 3/8 wrench and a 10mm socket. Is there a certain combination that I need to use to make this easy? I am having problems with the bottom nut.

Thanks for the help. I got fed up trying to do this after my hands started to freeze.

12 point 10mm deep well socket from Craftsman is what I used for this.

Thanks Ray, I am headed to Sears in a few. I went to 3 parts stores and not one of them had 1/4" 12-point sockets.

12 point 11mm worked for me - even though a 10 will probably work as well. I had to take my bit to the grinder and thin out the walls of the socket to make it skinny enough to fit - it does... but it's tricky as hell.
I would vote those 2 nuts to be some of the most difficult nuts to remove on the car...

I would vote with you on that, those bolts are one hell of a mess to get out. The top one wasn't bad, but the bottom one cost me several trips around town, and finally almost $15 bucks for a Snap on Deep well 1/4 drive 12 point socket. Not to mention the wastegate didn't come out easy once those bolts were off. Then I had to get the pipe removed, which became another mess. I almost have the engine out now, but it is on standby until next week.

Does anyone know if the 745i engine can be removed with the tranny attached? The radiator is gone, but I wonder if I have the clearance from the core support to pull the engine with the 4hp22 attached???

as long as you have a load leveler it is a piece of cake. I always remove and install engine/transmission assemblies in this manner.

yeah - with an engine leveler you can tilt the living snot out of the engine and just get it out in one big piece. Just make sure the car is up high enough and you have enough ceiling space.

Sounds good. I have a load leveller, and will most likely lift the car with some jack stands for the clearance necessary to get that tranny out with the engine.
