my M30 into an e30 project
well im tearing down an e28 right now to put the M30 drivetrain into an E30 after being rebuilt of course. My goal is 300-350 whp. Im wondering what to use for some components. Im looking at the tcd or a custom log style manifold. What turbo would be ideal? T3/T4? Also what injector size would I get from tcd for my setup? Headgasket? Otherwise Ive done some reading and have found most all of the info I need. Great forum by the way!
I realize the internals will stay the same. Which injectors should I use though? 30 lb? and Ill be rebuilding the engine anyway so since Ill be replacing the headgasket Ill get the proper one. Can I get a MLS (im assuming it means multi layer steel) headgasket for the M30 at any old auto parts store, or will I need to order that from somewhere special?

^there are some spots where i can see rust underneath the paint, but the car or panels are yours, make a price and let me know. If you want, I can take more pics of specific parts or you can come take a look and decide what you want. If you want ill give you the whole thing when im done for pretty cheap

The cars gone and Ive got the following in my garage:
M30
Trans
3.25 LSD diff
radiator
e30.de e30 m30 motor mounts (got them from a guy in the US cheap!)
e34 oil pan and pump
engine accessories
intercooler that may work
The next steps will be to rebuild the engine. It will cost about 500-700 to bore/hone the cylinders, clean it up, replace the freeze plugs, check all threads and clean them, inspect block, inspect head, magnaflux (i think) head, valve job, clean head. The reason for the variation in price is that I can get red rooster to do the machining and it will cost a bit over 500. Ive been told Ill want the place to use a torque plate when they hone/bore the cylinders?? People tell me it will probably cost 200-300 more at a place because they'll have to make the plate.
So once that machining is done, Ill buy the rebuild parts, with a mls head gasket and head studs from tcd. Stock crank, rods and pistons assuming they're all in good shape. (id get better pistons so I could do some very serious numbers, but Im trying to do this on a budget...)
After this, Ill gather turbo parts and megasquirt to set the car up. Im pumped that I already got the motor mounts! That was one of the uncertain areas (I didnt want to have to buy them from germany, and someone told me tino doesnt make them anymore..)

The engine and gearbox being pulled
The 5 with its guts torn out..
rip...
For most of the engine pulling procedure, we had the gearbox and engine held to the engine hoist by one bolt...
glad it made it through
The 5 speed getrag
The 3.25 lsd from the 5 (axle shafts still attached).
Its not very pretty yet, but its a good start. Ill inspect the diff and gearbox and replace any gaskets or seals, and hopefully not need to have them rebuilt. Will update as the project develops. Wouldnt doubt it'll take me several months...
Heres my little e30 that the setup will go into..

bmwmike,
Thanks for showing us how NOT to pull an engine. You may not care about the car that it was coming out of but, using one point on the engine for removal put the engine at risk of damage you will not find until you have it in the E30 and discover you cracked something.
With that, I wish you luck on the install; it will make for a very fun E30.

Man,
Minnesota roads are brutal on those under carraidge parts, ouch.
In regards to your questions above, if they havent' beed answered, Im not sure yo need a MLS gasket if you only need 300whp. You will need 30lb injs with a FMU for sure. All that stuff can be had from many places, one being TCD. To get to 300whp, you'll need at least a TO4B, but the TCD TO4E-61 is the bomb.

no problem, it was lifted from a hook in front which was bolted to the head iirc. When the machining is done, they'll let me know if i f***ed anything up, but it looks fine at this point.

looking good, Im a member at r3v too, so Ive already checked it out. I see we have some similar interests in cars.. I have an E34 M5, the E30 and recently sold an ex-cop car.Jaredtown wrote:http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=66023
As far as my car, Ive got the engine mounts, the E34 oil pan and pump, but thats about it. Im just saving up a bit more money and finishing school which is time consuming right now, but in a few weeks Ill tear the engine down, rebuild it, and go from there.

I have one thing to say when you get the car done try driveing the e30m30 for a wile because with the stock m30 with bolt on's i had 212 hp and 270ftq then I turboed with more bolt on's and with no tunning and at 4800 Rpm's 319whp 335wtq at 10psi with innercooler not hooked up. I must say todd's kit works really well.bmwmike wrote:looking good, Im a member at r3v too, so Ive already checked it out. I see we have some similar interests in cars..
