Heres a new idea, a diesel truck IC....this one is in a E34, but same principal applies to the E28..posted from the BF...

You'll have to cut and paste, they don't want to load for some reason, but work fine everywhere else.

Thats very interesting...

Is there a lot more space in front of the engine on an E34? How does that fit?

Besides the issue of physically installing one of these, it might work.

I don't know. It looks really tight in the that E34. If I did that, Id be more inclined to use electric fans and dump the whole fan/clutch system. I believe that diesel rad is 1.5" thick, so that helps. It gets its cooling from being humongous.

In looking at that further, I wouldn't use that system As its pressed up against the radiator and actually making a very large contact patch with it. I believe that can impart heat into the IC? I think. Plus, it still puts the IC in very close proximity to the engine heat. Its very unclear to me how well that works.

So.... if you didnt want to move the throttle body to the back side of the intake manifold, would an A/A intercooler with both ports on the same side be a better idea? Seems to me like it would, but are they as efficient? It's common sense that the air should lose less velocity if it travels in a straigher path, rather than making the 180 degree turn that it effectively will make with this style unit... But since the system is pressurized, does that lessen the effect?

The biggest issue you want to aviod is pressure drop. More bends will add to the pressure loss, or restriction. The same side ICs are fine, and offer equivalent cooling also. The key as always is size. What can fit. As I said earlier, if the piping is smooth enough, length mostly adds lag, but that shouldn't be a large added lag.

Since E28 have limited room with A/C, the same side IC is the best solution. If A/C removed, then a nice large IC can go there. If your going to change over the TB of the other side of manifold, then the normal IC is OK.

My application would be in a Euro 635CSi. There is no AC or bracket in the way, but there is a nice large oil cooler already behind the spoiler... I guess I should get in there and measure.
