Something has to be done, we need new laws
Nearly 17,000 children were rushed to emergency rooms in 2007, the last year for which complete figures were available, after heavy or unstable furniture fell over on them, a new study reported this month. The study, published in the journal Clinical Pediatrics by researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, found that the such injuries had risen 41 percent since 1990.
The increase correlated with the popularity of ever-bigger flat-panel televisions that Americans have brought into their homes in that time, along with the entertainment centers and narrow, less-stable stands to hold them. Injuries from televisions alone accounted for nearly half of all injuries related to falling furniture during the study period — 47 percent.
Like many other childhood bumps and bruises, most of the injuries related to falling furniture were minor. But 3 percent of the 264,200 children whose cases were reviewed from 1990 to 2007 were injured seriously enough to require hospital admission — most of them for head and neck injuries — and about 300 of them died.
I call for a ban on tv's and heavy furniture

When I was a kid I got pushed by a sibling while a bunch of us were playing chicken* and my head went through the glass front on the bookcase in the living room. Got a nasty gash in my head that probably should've been stitched up, but none of us wanted to tell mom about the bookcase. It was several weeks later when she finally noticed that there was only one glass panel there, and by that time my head had healed up, and none of us knew what might have happened to that glass door. 
I agree. Something must be done.
* For those who don't know, chicken is played by getting down on your knees and holding your feet up against your butt so you have to "walk" and balance only on your knees. Then you bump into your opponents and try to knock them down. I am the 2nd youngest of 8, so I didn't stand much of a chance in that crowd.

I worried about this just yesterday while I left my 2.5 y.o. daughter alone in the family room for a minute. I had that parental moment flash through my mind and had to get to her quick to make sure she was alright. She was, and the flat panel TV didn't look as big as it did in my mind's eye, I noticed, but it still should be fastened to the wall. I pondered how often kids get hurt this way.
Or we can just ban large flat panels, too. They do spew political opinions at times that I do not care to be exposed to, as well. Win-win.
