Thought this was pretty interesting...

M5 vs E55

On a related note, I took some photos of the new e60 ///M5 with my cellphone cam on Christmas Eve. I'll
try to post them up soon. Look pretty impressive in person and the V-10 engine sounds
really mean too. The new owner, a local chiropractor, seemed pretty pleased with himself as
he was getting out of the car...staring longingly at his new steed (black/black in color).

Meanwhile, I'm waiting for the e39 ///M5 to depreciate into the $15-20k range :D

Tim -

i bought my E28 M5 in 2000 for $14.5k.

So that got me thinking...
can i buy each M5, 12 years after the fact, for $15k?

If you look at the price of E34 M5s since 2003 (91+12), they've been very evenly distributed across the teens. Finding a nice E34 for $15k should be cake.

If you consider the E39.. those are already 5 years old and they're showing up in the high 20s and low 30s. I imagine by 2012 (only 6 more years) those will be under 20 as well.

So i thought about it some more (this M5 after 12 years for 15k pattern) and if you amortize the purchase price over each year until you buy the next generation one (12 years late), it works out that for $3k a year (amortized) you can own every generation of M5.. as long as you're willing to wait 12 years :)

It's a fun mental exercize. I need a shop space to store cars though.. we're already doing the 3 cars with a 2 car garage routine. I want to take the next step on the M5 "collection" and get a dedicated DE car...but i have to get space first :/

Matt,
I like the way you think buddy. That sounds like a workable plan with respect to ///M5 ownership :D I still miss the two ///M5s (e28, e34) that got away from me right at the last moment in negotiations with the sellers. It is just as well as I probably would have had to sell the thing over this past year anyway. Will look forward to owning an e39 ///M5 in about 6 years :) LOL...
Cheers,
Tim
