About Time for Another Autocorrect: "Rear Diff"

Post by Shawn D. »

There are at least two threads in Tech Talk about the "rear diff." I'm thinking about implementing an autocorrect:

"rear diff" --> "not-the-front diff (which E28s don't have)"

Seriously, folks, please quit putting "rear" in front of "diff" when talking E28s!

Shawn, you have too much time on your hands. While redundant on E28s, it's not incorrect. And other cars do sometimes get discussed in General Conversation which might have a front diff so there may be reason to specify.

So what's next? "Rear quarter panel"? "Front fender"?

We even have a thread going right now where someone is trying to put a rear diff from a 325ix into an E28. I say, you've got better ways to spend your time.

RTFP. I've bolded it for your convenience. ;)

Exactly. They're trying to remove the E28 diff and put an E30 diff in its place. Why would "rear" need to be specified? That's right, it doesn't.

The "too much time on your hands" type of argument is pretty lame, folks.

And your autocorrect will differentiate between E28s and non E28s?

Shawn, you're a bright guy, no one questions that. But too much time is shorthand for you fixing things that don't need to be fixed. Except in the perception of ShawnD. Like many things, less is more. Your autocorrects aren't a tool, but rather a weapon used against things that irritate you.

All this sounds a bit prejudicial against center diffs to me. As the proud owner of a BMW with all 3 diffs (NEVER a transaxle), I'm actually on Shawn's side. I'm sorry but there's really not much call to be specifying which end of the chassis you're referencing here. Seriously, any diff you're trying to shoehorn into your E28 is going to go in the obvious spot. If not, then I'll be first in line to buy it when you're successful and need to start differentiating. Not to mention, a simple proofread will illuminate when you need to slide in a creative misspelling while posting. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. I'm all for a little creative posting however.

As long as we're being all anal-retentive and stuff, don't you suppose this thread belongs somewhere other than GC? Like maybe in Comments ferinstance?

Dood. Can't you read? People west of the Mississippi are suspect and can't be trusted!

Also, i agree with the consensus. Autocorrecting rear diff is a bit much. I still get bit by the "anyway s" bug.

What's the Diff anyway s? ;)

I know what I'm reading when I'm reading it. Little things don't get to me (like the gong for instance).

I just flushed my own rear diff (if you know what I mean)  :bawl:

No disrespect (and yes it's bothered me too) but in the grand scheme of grammatical/spelling fuck ups, isn't this fairly trivial? Plus strictly speaking, it's not incorrect.

Autocorrect "irregardless", not that irregardless is anymore of a word than irreguardless.
