Just a few days away from the paint booth...

Post by Drew in Ohio »

With the help of a very good buddy of mine, we have been working daily for the past week on my E28 getting it ready for paint. We've straightened out the entire body, guide-coat now sands perfectly flat, and we are just days away from shooting and sanding our final primer coating and then we apply COLOR. My choice of color is still being determined.

I'm sure I'll post the final results when the day comes.

What are some general primary colors you are considering? Red?
Blue?

Good work! I'm excited to see the results. I just started my training on sanding and painting last week, so I know I'm a good ways away from professional quality.

I like Lachsilber with the cardinal red interior. Is that the original color?

It was Lachsilber Metallic with Cardinal interior. I'm pretty sure the new color will be in the dark gray/black-ish range of the color spectrum. The car was in good cosmetic shape, but I just don't like silver.

We made good progress today and we expect we will be in the paint booth applying color later this week.

Shifty: I've never done any of this before. This is the first car I've ever performed bodywork/sanding/painting. The shop I'm working on the car at has been a great help in the process.

Awesome! I am thinking about starting the body work on my 6er this summer when I can get a free spot in the garrage for a couple weeks... My dad has experience in body prep from when he used to build crazy VW Beetles, but this will be my first time :D

Progress this week has been slowed since I got a nasty cold and couldn't work on it yesterday, and will be unable to work on it this weekend. I got everything masked tonight, and will be shooting primer on it tomorrow.

Pictures of the car after primer:
Current plan is to paint the car some shade of dark blue.

We can email back and forth. I can be contacted at. I am fortunate that the shop which I am working on the car has several very experienced paint/body guys guiding me along and providing information/help/pointers/etc. I also attended a class they provided, which was presented by a major paint company (I can't remember who) which was very informative about steps to achieve a show quality paint job. I am straying from the common base coat/clear coat approach and will be spraying a single-stage paint, followed by a layer of clear coat. I expect due to unrelated delays, the car will be painted sometime early next week.

Looks like someone is getting a Silvia front end put on their 240 in the background.

Can't wait to see the E28 after it's done

Haven't looked at all the pictures yet --- but is the interior getting a repaint also?

Have you thought about something like BMW Silver Grey (E46s) ? Steel Grey? Carbon Black?

Or perhaps something real striking like Imola Red II?

Looks like fantastic prep work - I can only imagine that the paint itself will be spectacular!

The interior will not be getting paint, its stripped for new carpet, new headliner, etc.

I haven't made much progress the last few weeks, I've been busy with other commitments. the paint was ordered last night, it is supposed to arrive today and I will be shooting all jams and such this weekend. Then hang the doors, final wet sand and shoot the body. I suspect if I don't get too busy it will be completed by next weekend.

FYI, this is all being performed at a new DIY place not far from where I live. Anyone in SW Ohio without facilities to do their own paint/body/mechanical work should check them out. Very good shop, with lifts, air, tools, powdercoating, welding, lots of classes, etc. PM or email for details.

I have new pictures. I'll upload them tonight.
