My e28 finally arrives home

UPS brought me a piece of rear bumper trim so I took it to the paint shop so they can match it to the rest of the trim that they are painting. The car has been wet-sanded and compounded, but not yet polished. The car looked fabulous. I'm very pleased.

It was the center rear plastic piece. The fact that it was all wavy was pissing me off.

I looked at that a while back. I thought maybe I could race the e30 at VIR that weekend and also meet my fellow e28 types. Or, failing that, just drive the e28 up. I think it's about 8hrs. But I think i'm defeated. Wife is taking one of the kids on a trip that weekend so I've two youngsters to look after. They aren't nearly into cars and beer like I am. Keeping them in the comfort and state of amusement that they've come to expect could be a real trial. For all of us.

Question, though: I'm not a fan of the loose leather look or feel. I prefer the super taut look/feel of current BMW leather seats. Is it possible to get custom work done like this on E28 or E34 seats such that the leather is super tight?

When new leather is installed, it has the loose appearance you are seeing. After some time in varying conditions, it will tighten up nicely. Generally. I've had a few interiors done in my time and have found that to universally be the case. I went into the first with the same question after getting it back.

I didn't explain myself clearly. The new type of leather found in modern BMW seats feels much thicker and more taut than '80-'90 vintage. What you are describing is how (relatively) supple leather tightens up some after installation. I get that. That is not what I meant.

We have 2008 135i cab. The leather feels much thicker and tightly wrapped than my older BMWs (or Porsche or Audi). It also has a more pronounced grain.

I am wondering if anyone retrofits that style of leather onto old style seats.
