Wiped her down after returning from the San Diego clean car contest. Decided to do a light polishing of the hood and trunk followed by some carnauba wax. Then took her out this morning to Cars and Coffee.

Ordered the parts for the long overdue 4 yr/60k mile service. More like 7/ 75 List includes a 30$ GMB water pump. This is going into BB Shiftless.

Changed spark plugs and air filter. Fuel filter tomorrow. Re-painted hood vents and grille with Dupli-Color flat black trim paint.

Little late, but I changed the diff fluid, only to find no metal chunks or odd wear on the ring/pinion gears. Ran the car to 60mph while I was under it (car was on the lift) and I think it's the diff carrier bearings that are howling. Took the axles off, rebuilt them. Noticed the stub shaft was very loose (in and out movement) in the housing.

finally got my rear caliper fixed, had to replace three bolts along the way from the PO getting overzealous with an air gun :/
replaced the airfilter with a mahle, oil filter with a mann, and have vr1 20w-50 in it now. next up, i have a couple quarts of royal purple diff oil, mines been slowly leaking, even though i had replaced the gasket last summer, might hit it up with some rtv

otherwise just glad to do some light canyon carving, and some dirt lot donuts :banana: :banana:

Actually did this on Monday but I'm just mow posting. Put in the e34 front seats that I got for free from tomcrinic. Big thanks to him for that.

and also did this, from my last junkyard find, literally plug and play,


its an e23 headlight switch, when i was in the junkyard, i saw a e23 735i in amazingly good interior shape, realized the headlight switch was similar, with the same plug, and the screening on it, so i snagged it, and an e28 one, as i needed a replacement.

threw it in today after dusty donuts for donut day, and it works fine, better than the broken one in it :alright:
i've also nearly perfected the art of having the lower dash panel go in and stay in easier, or at least i tell myself every time, until its in my shins

Brake system flush with Super Blue. Then throw a fit when the hose for the clutch master cylinder pops off, allowing new fluid to run out of the master cylinder reservoir. I swear, some complete maniac designed the brake/clutch system on these cars. And a maniac with very small hands at that. :laugh:

I trimmed off about a half an inch of the clutch hose, fitted a band clamp, and fought the hose back onto the reservoir nipple.

I think that when they designed the E28, they penned it, then made a model, then made the car, and then said, "Shit, we forgot to put brakes and clutch on this thing!" "Oh, here's a bit of remaining space tucked up over here. Let's cram it all right there." :roll:

would the e23 foglight switch work in the e28s? i didnt look at the pins, maybe next time at the yard, i'll look, though i dont mind the blank button, it just looks cooler with a label. big upgrade from my burnt out burnt out dimmer headlight switch that was in it before, also have a good working headlight switch i got just incase the endeavor didnt work out. to the parts hoard it is added!

In between honey doos, I drained the block, removed the cap shroud and fan . I jammed a screw driver into the alternator pulley and loosened the WP pulley bolts, easiest I've ever done it. I am pleased with the baseline service I did right after buying the car in '05. I didn't just replace parts I fixed stuff so that the engine would be easy to service, the next time around .That time is here and so far ,so good. :cool:

A bit more progress I pulled the plugs and set the rotor ball parked to #1 cylinder. Having numbered wires makes this a no brainer. One is in line with the inboard-cap screw , BTW I found TDC by putting the battery hold down rod in the plug hole and rocking the crank with a 7/8 ratchet . After clearing off the belts, there it was , the timing marks highlighted in white. I like to set the engine at TDC before changing the TB. This time , per Matt;s experience with having the sheet .metal idler gear let go, I have a cast gear to install. 30 bucks is short money . I should have ordered plugs but the outfit wanted me to buy 2 4 packs. The NGKs I took out were running pretty clean and ~evenly coated. Maybe a tad lean. The tips were worn on 1 side like a worn heel .I can probably get them locally. I will check records, but the plugs have about 40k miles , IIRC.

In the middle of troubleshooting right now. Headed to lunch to meet the fam the 528 died on me taking a turn, seemingly in sync with the switching on of the blinker. I managed to land it in a parking spot and walked to lunch. Same thing happened a few days ago, but started right up. This time it didn't. Cranks, but won't start. Lunch is now over, headed back to car.

The E28 lifestyle is a never-ending adventure.

Yesterday I was on a gravy train with biscuit wheels, today it's back to the usual grind.

Update...yup the 528 started right up after a 1 hr lunch, I then went to gas it up, as it was hesitating a bit on the hills and the gas-o-meter is wonky. Almost 11 gallons went in the tank. And then it wouldn't start. Tried to a bit. So I parked it there at the station and walked back to my garage, and warmed up the M5. Took a spin to feel the car out, went by the 528 (it'd been about 25 mins since I parked it) and it still wouldn't start. Keeping toes crossed that it will start in a bit and directly in the garage it will go. Daily recreational driver is going to be the M5 until the eta gets sorted. Sounds good.

Yesterday, I watched it drive away. Sold it to an e30 guy who lives a couple cities over. It was a sad day since I no longer have an e28 to drive on my daily adventures, let alone one that I can shift at will. I guess I should get my but to work on this one. It's the first day without it but I want it back already. :(

I did this recently, also. They found the old battery (which mind you was a freebie from my housemate who works in the parts department at the local dealership) wasn't up to standard, and replaced it under warranty with a spankin' new one.
