I purchased mine from the BMW dealership last July. I took it home and installed it myself. The following month I drove it to Montery. I noticed after I returned from my trip that the battery wasn't holding a charge for very long even if I unplugged it; so yesterday I decided to take it to BMW for a replacement, I pulled out of the garage, drove to the gas station, filled up and then it wouldn't start. How convenient, it's like the battery knew.Das_Prachtstraße wrote:I did this recently, also. They found the old battery (which mind you was a freebie from my housemate who works in the parts department at the local dealership) wasn't up to standard, and replaced it under warranty with a spankin' new one.
What did you do to your E28 today?

I did some werk on the new to me 87 535is.
Pick up your nuts and get out of my airbox
New Mahle air filter for my S38B35 finally arrived, so went to install. Before even opening the airbox I removed the plastic, cold air part of the intake and noticed something inside.
I'm guessing a chipmunk had a party in there as I really don't think a squirrel could have fit in behind the headlight while carrying a bag full of acorns. At least the plenum side of the box was clean.
Disclaimer for the following abomination; I just purchased the car a couple months ago and have been chipping away at a few general maintenance items beginning with oil and radiator flush. I have never seen an air filter this bad, not just dirty, but more than 60% of the pleats were filled with chipmunk party debris.
Needless to say, the car has very much appreciated my clearing up this issue and there was a noticeable HP gain, especially in the 5-6k rev range. Eventually airbox will be repainted.

At first I saw honeycomb and expected to see a swarm in the next pic.1st 5er wrote:Sorry, but I .bigwave wrote:

Wow!
Picked up a 100k block on Friday in Charlotte.
Drove to SC Saturday early and:
Pulled my wounded block and tranny out.
swapped in said block.
Swapped over the head, intake and exhaust manifolds.
Swapped over oil pump with 10k on it.
Water pump.....
Rear main seal had been freshly done.
Fresh MLS head gasket.
New b35 starter.
New Kevlar clutch and HD pressure plate via TCD by Clutchmaters.
Installed everything fresh in the shift linkage.
Installed new factory e23 745i turbo feed line.
Put it all back together and drove home Sunday morning at 5am.
It was a marathon, none stop, 21 hours......
Tight quarters of the e28 engine bay with the e23 turbo setup was quite a challenge......
DJM1986-5 in the man, he did the lion's share while I handed him tools, just kidding, I did a little...

Re: Wow!
Backed it into the garage yesterday and started in on replacing the rear shocks. Didn't get far, and haven't touched it yet today. Yet. Also thought about other projects that I could do "while I'm in there" but decided to keep it minimal so it doesn't stay stuck in the garage for overly long. Especially after the wife has already asked when she gets her garage back. She's a funny girl.
Any chance you make house calls? Wrenchfest, my place. Beer & burgers on me.
That's pretty amazing. You both deserve a littlegrey ghost wrote:Picked up a 100k block on Friday in Charlotte.

Finished up the new shocks on the back; cannot believe how much better it rides with the Bilstiens in place of the old KYBs. Thanks, geordi; you're the greatest. I owe you!
Also tidied up the area under the rear window with a new-to-me rear shelf in black. Picked it up from a junker a couple of weeks ago along with the premium speakers. Cleaned it up and sprayed it a few days ago with some Duplicolor fabric paint, and installed the whole works today. Looks much better and the sound is much improved!
Took it for a drive to pick up my latest CraigsList score; Craftsman 3-drawer toolbox for $20. Not bad.

installed rear spax
Decided to install the rear Spax today since the fronts are currently on my other e28. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to pull them out and get them ready for new install, along with my Meyle HD front end parts. I kind of like the stock height better but think it will grow on me once the front is complete.

Well since the weather is so nice here I decided to install my new to me m5 brake calipers and 540i rotors.
First I sent the calipers out to be rebuilt. The shop cleaned them up far better than I could have. I painted the calipers and the rotors as well so I wouldn't get any rust on the hats and the outer edges of the rotors.
I like that added stopping power but I also like that I was able to do some cleaning and painting of the dust shields.

Since I brought the white IS home this week from transplant surgery, I have spent a few hours cleaning and polishing contacts on all brake and signal lights to make them all work (And shut the damn indicator light s off!).
Fiddled with the AC fuse, cleaned multiple contacts for AC and now the AC works fine. Gauges say it is a bit low on 134a (30 psi on low side), we'll see how it does before wasting half a can.
Temporarily fixed a separated trunk gasket corner with Shoe Goo (it will hold till I get a new gasket).
Too sweaty for this crap so I went in and drank a few Leinekugel, Summer Wheat.

Replaced both rear drive flange's, finally driving the car over 80mph the anti lock stays off, and when coming to a stop the ABS is not kicking in....
Also picked up a set of Hartge type A's 7.5 x 16" for it, put one on just to check em out, one is pretty scratched. I'd like to run summer tires on these and use my 15" basic basketweaves in the off season ( have all season pilot exalto's on them):

Sheesh!!!
