Detailed M5

Post by RoyW »

I spent the better part of the last 2 days detailing Motronic's e28 M5. It's a 154K mile car in great condition and basically all stock. Thought I'd share the results.

On the paint, I did five passes: Clay bar, Meguire's Ultimate Cut Compond, Meguire's Ultimate Finishing Polish, Blacklight Glaze, Blacklight Radiant Finish. This process removed all swirls and most of the water/acid rain/other marks and produce a gleaming finish.

Roy is a great guy and a perfectionist. There is a lot of talent displayed in the work he does. If I only had a house as nice as his auto bahn (garage).

If only I had a car worthy of that kind of attention. :|

Damn, you do nice work Roy! :alright:

How long did the clay bar stage take you? It seems to take me forever to do that.

That's fantastic, Roy! Congrats Jim. You're lucky to be near someone with such great attention to detail.

Same here. I get all excited about it and about half way through I'm all like "Why the fu** is this taking so long??!" lol

VERY nice work! You live too far away sir.

The clay bar stage takes me about 45 minutes. The key is a good clay lubricant and good quality clay... I used Pinnacle products for this: http://www.pinnaclewax.com/piulfigrdepo.html

This is an important step, especially if your car spends a lot of time outside, i.e., no garage., as you will have lots of containments on the paint. The polishes and waxes work better with a clean paint surface, which the clay will provide.

Roy, 45 minutes is about the time it takes me to do the roof or the hood!

I've used Miguiar's clay in the past and I'm trying Griot's now. The Griot's does seem to be easier to use and gets better results.

I've seen this mentioned on other forums. You should just let the clay slip along the paint with use of the lubricant (or soapy car wash + water). Shouldn't take much longer than a wash.

Very nice work. Is the M5 original factory paint?

Nope, it had been re-sprayed by the PO (prior to Jim)... but, it was a quality job, I'd say.

Excellent finish Roy, that looks amazing. Jim, I'd be happy to have even your garage.

The M5 looks great! The Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Polish is a really good system, I switched over to them for the over-the-counter convenience and they get the job done.

Another example of nothing looks as good as black when it looks good and nothing looks as bad as black when it looks bad. My black cars have always been the latter, but when they look good no color looks as good.
