when going with EDIS and coil packs? I've seen the plug for the m10 & m20 but not one to fill that big fat hole in the front of our. I know I could just leave the cap on, but thats too easy.
The seal is deeper in the timing cover and seals against the rotor hub. There is also an o-ring on the black dust cover. That dust cover and it's o-ring can be retained, pressed into place by whatever you choose to replace the distributor cap with.

Scrole down a few pics and you'll see Duke's engine with a cover plate.

I seem to remember this came up once before, maybe last year sometime, and the end result was even though the 320i part looks right it won't fit on the M30 engine.
I have no personal experience so I'm not the authority, but it may be worth a search of the archives.
Edited to add: I think it was discussed during Duke's engine buildup, I'll bet he remembers.

Carb'd m30s had the distributor mounted on the front of the head, correct? It seems that the mounting hole for the distributer would be a pretty small hole to close off for use with a distributorless ignition system. And since it had something there originally (the distributor), there should be an easy way to mount a blockoff plate.
Unless I'm missing something really obvious. Which is pretty likely since I'm attempting to think waaaay past my bedtime.

All M30's prior to Motronic DME had the dizzy poking out of the front cover toward the passenger fender. That would include anything up through the '82 e24. You could probably tap the dizzy hole and screw in a plug. The one for the timing chain tensioner might work.Jeremy wrote:Carb'd m30s had the distributor mounted on the front of the head, correct? Why tap the hole, I bet the hole for the dizzy would probably take a metric sized freeze plug. I was going to do this when I deleted the speedo drive on the G265 (from an E12) that I installed in my deceased 533i. I couldn't locally source a freeze plug, but I did find one of those rubber expanding freeze plugs which fit perfectly.Velocewest wrote:All M30's prior to Motronic DME had the dizzy poking out of the front cover toward the passenger fender. Yep, I was overcharged for the powder coating too. Don't get me started..........OK, he also charged me over $200 for the E34 60-2 dampener with a really bad spray paint coating. I returned it and got one from Jim "at the shop" for $30.BNC wrote:Your's was originally billet wasn't it, then powdercoated???The cover I have on mine is from The Power Plant. I was charged something like $150 for it, way too much
