Gambia, huh? I have a friend who went to Gambia a few years ago. Does she know anybody named Cheryl from that trip?

Um, scroll up a little. (I forgot to talk with you about that last year in Sandy Eggo!)Kenny Blankenship wrote:Gambia, huh? I have a friend who went to Gambia a few years ago. Does she know anybody named Cheryl from that trip?

Way to go Emily.

Re: WOT -- My Little Girl Is At It Again - 2015 Update
Tyler's announcement from a few days ago made me think of my little girl and how quickly time flies by. Seems like just a few weeks ago that she was all bundled up looking like his little doll. But my little doll is all grown up now and accomplishing whatever she sets her mind to.
Since my last update on this thread she returned from her trip to Mali with lots of great stories to tell. It sounds like she was able to do a lot while there, and was able to recover from her jet-lag to a semi-normal state of being in time for her graduation, two days after landing.
So now she's done with medical school and is rolling with a few extra letters to her name, courtesy of the USD Sanford School of Medicine (no, Charles; not that USD, this one. ) My wife and I can now take comfort in the knowledge that we have a doctor in the family to care for us when we get old and feeble.
Emily, or rather, Dr. Emily Thornton, MD, is third from the left, along with some of her buddies, including Dr. Pepper, the tall one on the right.
She will be starting her residency in mid-June at UNMC in Omaha, NE, specializing in OB/GYN doctoring. She's got a little time off now, but is staying busy with buying a townhouse near Lauritzen Gardens (moving day is June 6), and doing some car shopping; she's wanting something newer, slightly bigger, and with a couple more doors than her e36 318ti, to get her through the next four years or so. She & my wife are in Omaha right now checking out a couple of possibilities there; she definitely wants something with a manual transmission, which severely limits her options, but she knows what she wants and isn't concerned about covering a little distance to get it.
Yeah, you could say I'm a proud papa, and a guy has to brag on his kids once in a while. A good friend of ours commented a while back on how cool it is when your kids become your heros; that is so very true. It's been a fun ride watching her grow and mature through all she's doing to become the beautiful woman she is. Makes it all worthwhile.

Yeah, I don't think an e28 is in the running. I stumbled across a decent-looking 535i in her price range in the Minneapolis CraigsList; she just rolled her eyes when I showed her. She did find one she thought was a keeper in Omaha though; a one-owner 2008 Subaru Impreza with 54,000 miles on it.WilNJ wrote:She's a Dr. Just call EAG for an M5.davintosh wrote:she definitely wants something with a manual transmission, which severely limits her options.
Not exactly the color combo I would've picked, but it seemed like a solid car for a decent price, so she's driving it home.
Anybody wanna buy a '98 318ti?

At least she didn't buy a Forester!!
Congrats on the success of raising what appears to be a great human.

Congrats. That is huge! My one and only daughter is an MD (neonatal doc) and it was a long and tedious road. I was able to pay off her loans as a graduation present, but it added a year or three to my work life. I know you are and should be very proud indeed.
Re: WOT -- My Little Girl Is At It Again - 2015 Update
get the subbie for her and an e28 for you for doing such a great job.
Re: WOT -- My Little Girl Is At It Again - 2015 Update
Congrats Dave, and pass on "CONGRATS!!!" to Emily.
I know you both are super .

That's a pretty awesome gift.m-racer wrote:Congrats. That is huge! My one and only daughter is an MD (neonatal doc) and it was a long and tedious road. Dave, good for you and especially for your daughter! Part of the reason I went the route of becoming the non-useful type of Dr. was to avoid the loans; tuition coverage + research stipend won't make anyone rich, but zero debt for grad school was nice. Med school is expensive!

Kids dont turn out good on accident; especially these days. A tip of a hat to you and your wife and whoever else was there along the way.

Thanks, everybody! I've always thought she was pretty neat, but thought it was just a daddy's slightly biased opinion, so it's always good to hear it from others as well.
June 1 update:
I need to sell that 318ti quick; I drove it to work today, and think it could get me in trouble. Not that it's got a lot of power, it's just that the M42 seems so much happier in the 4,000-6,500 RPM range, and it's way too easy to find yourself way over the speed limit in town. And the fact that it's Hellrot (aka. Arrest-Me Red) and a BMW make it that much more a target for local law enforcement.
June 1 update:
- She did buy the Subbie, but hasn't figured out a name for it yet. I still haven't seen it, but that's ok; I have zero responsibility for it.
- She left her 318ti with me, and somehow sweet-talked me into selling it for her. I have full responsibility for that one.
- She closes on her townhouse purchase on Friday, then is going to a friend's wedding on Friday evening, then will be at our house bright & early on Saturday cracking the whip to get her stuff hauled the ~3 hours to Omaha to get moved in.

Re: WOT -- My Little Girl Is At It Again - 2019 Update
It's been a little over 4 years since I last updated this thread; man does time fly! In the intervening time she's been through four years of residency at UNMC in Omaha, finishing that chapter in June of this year. Earlier in the year she signed a contract with a hospital system in Brookings, SD, (about an hour north of Sioux Falls), and took the summer off so that she and her hubby (oh yeah, she found a fella and they got hitched about 3 years ago) could get moved and settled before starting another new chapter. She started the new gig as an OB/GYN today.
She sent us a link to her profile on the hospital's website; pretty cool to see my baby girl doing this. You could say I'm a proud papa, 'cuz I am. I'm reminded again of what a friend said about how cool it is when your kids become your heroes; very, very true. She was a handful when she was little, but watching her become the beautiful woman she is indeed makes it all worthwhile.
And oh yeah... She's making me a grandpa later this year too. I'm really looking forward to the new title.

Proud papa should be proud papa. Well done, sir.
Re: WOT -- My Little Girl Is At It Again - 2019 Update
Wow, congrats! Tough to envision my kids in a medical profession, since they can’t even wipe their own butts.
Re: WOT -- My Little Girl Is At It Again - 2019 Update
Great news. Davintosh . Congrats on a job done well raising her up. Grandchildren are the payoff for raising kids.

I was going to have you tell her to move to Reno because we could use a few more doctors here but neither Pam or I need her services...
