So, I still need to get the brake lines changed, possibly to steel braided lines, and have them bled properly for a stronger brake feel. Do you guys recommend a particular performance brake fluid?

In the engine department, I know I can go turbo with the existing M30B35 for good power, but will that improve the existing 16-17 mpg fuel economy any? Is there a better engine swap choice for power and better mpg, maybe the S54 or N52?

Ya dude. ANY engine will give way better mpg then an m30.
Turbos will guzzle gas it never helps mpg.

So, if I eventually want 400-500 HP with decent mpg which setup should I go for?

Your humor, my dilemma. Decent mileage could just mean ~20 mpg

20mpg SURE!!!! on the freeway constant below 70mph and no boosting what so ever.
a 2.93 rear end is also a need.

You put any amount of boost it's going to guzzle hard.
The real question is why turbo if you're going to baby it. Ask yourself that for real.
Nitrous would be better. I'm not messing with you I would do nitrous if I was worried about MPG in my m30.

Again, I'm not messing with you or making fun of you at all this is the truth.

Thanks, I was thinking to. As it is with the factory 3.45 in 5th (manual) the best I got around 70 mph prolonged highway was around 19. I mostly get 15.8-17.3 around town and back country roads loaded down with tools, etc on regular gas. I want more power for when I need it or want to play

In my e34 535 and 3.15 diff and I get 25 highway at 75 mph. In my turbo e34 535 and 3.23 diff I get 22 highway at 75 mph. If you're worried about gas mileage get a VW TDI. I think that has a turbo in it and is very clean burning.

How does the acceleration feel with those gear sets? Does the turbo overcome the lower gearing?

If you really wanted a MPG improvement, ditch the old motronic setup and go for megasquirt and set it up just right you'll pick up a couple of MPG. You don't buy a BMW for MPG though, especially one with an old ass M30 in it.
