Break in oil after rebuild

Hi guys

Getting ready to crank up my engine after rebuild, It is a M30b35 with turbo goodies. I was recomended by a fellow bmw guru to use royal purple special synthetic break in oil for the first 1000miles. I'm wondering what other people have used as a break in oil ?

I use whatever oil I'll be using for the life of the engine. I drain it after 100 or so miles to check for metal, etc, then again after 500 miles. If that looks good, I put it in regular maintenance intervals.

I'd use a good quality dino oil with a couple of short use change intervals, like 50 and 300 miles. I'd also open the used filters and inspect for any metal, also check the drain pan for any shiney bits.

Maybe a recycled store brand dino oil that is $0.49 a Quart.

I use lucas oil break in additive and a good filter. I'll change the filter at 500 miles then do a oil and filter change at 1000 miles. After that I run normal oil and service intervals

That seems like a bad idea if you're running a wasted spark system

Because ATF is explosive so cylinders would be going through an ignition stroke when they're not supposed to

That's a head scratcher. You can go buy VR1 20w50 at any number of auto parts chain stores. Great oil for assembly lube, break in and the next hundred thousand miles of operation.

Diseasel oil is also great. Lots and lots of zinc to keep all those big diesel engines happy as clams

You would think. Newer CJ-4 diesel oils have reduced ZDDP levels. Not as bad as most automotive API SM/SN oils but still sub-optimal. VR-1 20w50 comes with 1400ppm Zinc according to their current product data sheet and is a more appropriate viscosity than a 10w30 or 15w40 diesel oil.

Still no reason to run anything else year round unless you live right up on the northern border. In very cold climates I would only run VR-1 in the summer months.

The issue with the VR1 is that it's becoming discontinued all over the US because it's used so infrequently. There are a ton of articles and even a post or two on here about it

Valvoline is still making it though, so it' going to be available somewhere.

Somewhere. But if it just ends up being available online for $10/quart, I wouldn't pay for it. I stopped buying it because the only place to get it around here was Advanced Auto and now they no longer sell it. Starting last oil change, I'm using Mobil1 15w50 and I'm loving it. It's the perfect year round oil for these cars, in my opinion of course.

Mobil 1 is around 1200ppm. Marginal protection when fresh and its downhill from there. Not good enough to provide satisfactory wear protection though the whole oil change interval. The stuff ain't cheap either. I'd still mail order VR1 between those two if it came down to it.

I'll be using this oil on a rebuilt motor
