My 85 535i build
Re: My 85 535i build
Last night I removed the everything to get at the waterpump and decided to dig deeper and fix the long time minor oil leaks coming from the timing cover seals and oil pan. I'm going to remove the subframe and reinforce it at the same time. While I had the steering arms removed I smoothed out the castings out of boredom. I'll drop off everything to be blasted tomorrow and paint the garbage when I get it back.
Timing chain guide is worn so I'll replace that too.

Looks like it has a rear main seal leaks too, I'm not surprised but I'm pretty bummed at the timing of my ill fated decision to dig into it.

What's your detergent of choice? Does it leave the paint flat?

Right now I'm using greased lighting, it probably would if it was left on too long. I want it clean, I'm less interested in shiny paint on this car. This is just a high mile bottomless money pit driver.
If I wasn't so broke I'd have the motor built while it's out but it's not in the cards at this point.
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/01/16)
Lots of cleaning and whatnot.
The engine bay needs a bit more work...
The transmission took a lot of time to clean, it was awfully dirty.
The oil pan was pretty gross on the outside.
I had some parts blasted. Gonna re-enforce the subframe then paint it.

Savage progress

I'm a bit behind schedule but I should have it back together by Wednesday....

There you go, tell me that doesn't feel good. You're doing some good stuff man. You might have a spotless car, but unless it's shiny it's gonna get dirty quick. That old single stage is gonna soak it up. Still, that's nice. Good work. I'm gonna do that next month or two. Nothing crazy, just a good clean.
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/07/16)
Today I've been wrapping some things up, I painted, cleaned and assembled a bunch of rubbish.
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/07/16)
Nice rubbish!
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/07/16)
Thanks, I like the car more now that I've done a few more things to it.
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/07/16)
awesome work! that car has never looked better.

Thanks, I've put over a hundred hours into it in the last nine days, my finger tips are pretty raw feeling.
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/09/16)
Tonight I scrubbed the engine bay in every cranny I could reach and used some cleaner wax on all the surfaces I could reach. I also prepped and painted the intake manifold among many other small tasks.
This is by bar the most expensive $1500 car I've ever had.

I'm a fan of expensive $1500-2000 Alpine White E28s. At least yours isn't an Eta.

I could convert it to an eta.
Re: My 85 535i build (update 11/09/16)
Made some solid progress tonight. My hillbilly ingenuity built this engine cradle with scraps from around the shed. I installed my new upper/lower control arms with new poly bushings.
