Gauging interest: M30/S38 trans adapter plates!

Post by Cjames570 »

I am talking with the folks over at http://collinsadapters.com about making a trans adapter plate for the M30. There are a number of turbo guys on here that could use this. Currently the only transmission I am interested in using is the M50 patterned line.

Right now I am only gauging interest. They will not even think about making any of them or give me a price quote until I can get interested parties involved! Gauging by their pricing on the site the plate should be anywhere from $4-600, I would guess

Anyway, I am hoping some other folks would want to go in on this.

Interested parties please respond here and I will work on gaining more information

Thanks

I was under the impression the G260 bolts up to an M50, thus a M50 ZF should bolt up to an M30? The angle may be off but I'd assume it would be easier to modify the linkage than an adapter?

Unless I'm mis-reading the thread or am totally wrong which is certainly the case since I'm several stouts deep.

Yes the 260 from a m20 will bolt up to a m50 but it is not straight at all. The 260 from a m30 will not bolt up to an m50.

So am I hearing this right.

You are gauging interest to make adapter plates to use m50 transmissions on the m30!!!!

That mean would mean that we could get the 6 speed transfer from a zhp e46 or e90. Now this is something I'm highly interested in. The 6 gear is what the m30 needs.

Ah ok. That's what I get for spending too much time on r3vlimited. I'm getting my motors/chassis mixed up.

what would the thickness of the adapter plate be ?
how would this anticipated thickness affect the seating depth of the trans input shaft into the pilot bearing
what will be done to correct t/o bearing height variance with the added plate thickness?

not stirring up crap...the idea of a readily available 6spd behind an m30 is appealing...........

The m50 and newer zf trannies have an even shorter first gear than the stock g260 which is great for a 180hp m30 but not for a turbo m30.

nothing has been determined yet, but the way I see to solve the issues are to have a custom flywheel with the added thickness of the plate built into it that way all factory clutches and hydraulics could be retained...... pilot bearing, i assume, would use an extender in the crank or it could be machined to go into the flywheel instead

i hear you on this, but really what other path is there? im looking at an e46 420G for strength reasons (i have already blown 260's).... coupled with a 2.93 it should be bearable, no? a t56 would be nice, but it just seems like staying with a bmw trans makes it a tad easier

maybe ill just skip all this mess and take the cutting/welding bellhousing path

You're talking about using an m50 trans with an m30? What kind of tranny controller did you have in mind & custom tq converter?

Assuming you are talking about being able to bolt up a newer 6 speed tranny to an S38, I am very interested.

Thanks,

Since you said transmission I thought you were referencing an automatic.

Cool project. I can tell you from experience that have a 6 speed in an E28 chassis is a ton of fun. I have the S54/6spd swap with a 3.64 rear end and love it.

I would love to be able to make this happen. I'm just not sure he will think they are worth his time to only sell 5 max, but I will talk with him again and see if he will help us out or not. He seems to think nobody wants to do this to an m30

Interesting....If your guy turns out to be a no go, I have a machine shop in LaGrange Ga that could put this together I'm sure if we could supply him with the M30 block and the transmission. He made the s38 hardened crank hubs for me back in the day and did a great job for a very fair price. He does custom fabrication for some of the Kia suppliers etc

I don't know about this. But there is a M30 to DCT Conversion out. Tried and Tested.

Essentially if some makes a proper flywheel that goes with this adapter you can make a 6speed from the n54 or which ever n5x or m5x 6speed trans work. Some have done it and it requires more trans tunnel room. Some did it and details are shakey.
